When it comes to considering the pros and cons of living in Malaysia, one con that always pops up in my head is the limited space. As someone who resides in a relatively compact studio in Kuala Lumpur, it’s hard to keep stuff that I may not be using now but could in the future.
This is when I started to think outside the box and reached out to various storage units in KL. To my surprise, there are a lot of these facilities in the city, so I weighed the factors of each one before eventually landing on a storage unit near my home.

How much do storage units cost in KL?
Storage units in KL can cost anywhere from RM100 to RM500 per month. This depends on the size of the unit and its features e.g. air-conditioning, biometrics.

Cube Self Storage is one of the most well-known names in the industry and upon taking a closer look, we immediately saw why. For starters, we were impressed by the variety of storage options they offer, from something as small as a private room to a massive warehouse.
We also wanted to highlight their private self-storage rooms, as we think they offer the best value for money.
These rooms come with padlocks, card and code access, CCTV cameras and best of all, they’re climate-controlled so belongings can be kept in pristine condition. Also, aside from CCTVs, Cube Self Storage also features a security guard 24/7.
Another thing we appreciate about this storage facility is its flexible rent terms. It doesn’t tie you up with a locked period, as you can cancel your services anytime as long as you provide a notice in advance.
One issue that caught our attention was the rudeness of the customer service reported by some of their previous clients. This may be on a case-to-case basis, but we still wanted to include it here since our interviewees brought it up.

We’ve been familiar with StorHub Self Storage prior to making this list because of its numerous branches across the greater KL area.
We did an ocular of their facilities, and our immediate impression was that it was well-maintained. The overall facility felt like an office and we mean that in the best possible way, with its minimal design and 24/7 security features.
These security measures include your typical CCTV cameras and security guards but what we loved the most was the unique code that each storage owner is given.
Another thing we appreciate about StorHub is that it offers different-sized storage rooms to cater to the needs of various customers. These rooms are well-lit and ventilated though we wish they were climate-controlled to keep clients’ belongings in tip-top shape.
Aside from its lack of climate control, our main issue with this storage facility is its slightly pricey rates. We can’t knock on it too much though, as they offer multiple convenient payment options as well as regular promotions throughout the year.

Renting something in a foreign country in a foreign language is not an everyday occurrence for me and was my first experience in this area, now as a long-term traveller.
Additionally, due to extreme sleep deprivation, I wasn’t entirely in control of my normal abilities, and therefore, I was a bit confused and certainly demanding. But she was professional and took all the necessary time.

Extra Space immediately caught our attention because of its wine storage facilities. As wine connoisseurs ourselves, we were impressed that these storage facilities offered proper insulation and a temperature-controlled environment.
We also like how their private rooms start as small as 14 square feet, allowing those with minimal stuff to avail of a cheaper option. Moreover, we appreciate that they offer trolleys and ladders for free to make moving in and out easier for customers.
One of our favourite things about Extra Space however, is that they do regular pest control. This gives us the peace of mind that whichever furniture we plan to store inside the facility won’t be infested with termites.
The only thing we’re iffy about is their location since the facility is located right by a cement factory and dust gets flown everywhere.

Lock+Store was recommended to us by a friend because of its competitive price range so we had to check it out for ourselves. We weren’t expecting much because of the cheaper price point but we were impressed to see how well-built their storage facilities were.
Furthermore, they offer different sizes from lockers to huge rooms measuring up to 194 square feet. Also, these storage rooms are monitored 24/7 by security guards and CCTV cameras so clients can have peace of mind knowing their stuff is safe.
Plus, it helps that each room can only be accessed by a unique keycard.
Facilities-wise, we appreciate that they offer free trolleys and pallet jacks, which can come in handy in moving large boxes. Speaking of, they also offer different-sized boxes that can help secure customers’ belongings while inside the storage rooms.
One thing they could add to their storage rooms is temperature control. Although we have to give them props for providing good ventilation, some items require specific climates to preserve their condition.

When it comes to security, EZ Secure Storage features some of the most advanced measures. One thing that cemented our confidence in their security is how they keep a log of all the entries so that customers can backtrack records when something goes missing from their storage.
Also, they offer 24/7 video surveillance and security in their facilities and the building itself is gated and walled. We were also impressed to discover that entry to the storage rooms can only be accessed using a six-code passcode or biometrics.
We also appreciate that they offer transportation options to make the overall moving process smoother. They do cost additional but we can’t complain since it comes with professional packaging and a helper.
Speaking of additional costs, the only thing we don’t like about EZ Secure Storage is their above-average rates. At the same time, however, they do offer great value for money as each room is well-built and the customer service is world-class.
