One of the things I love the most about being a resident of Malaysia is the abundance of islands that the country houses. There are tons out there but my friends and I have concluded that our favourite one is Hujung Island, located off the coast of Johor.
It’s uninhabited, which means that humans have not ruined it with commercialisation yet and it’s certainly a huge part of its charm! With that being said, it’s not as easy to plan a perfect trip to a remote island such as this, which we learned the hard way.
That’s where we come in! Through many trips, we can finally say we’ve mastered the perfect getaway to Hujung Island, and since you’re nice enough to click on this blog, we’re going to share our secrets with you.

Where is Hujung Island?

The unpopulated island of Hujung is located off the Northeast coast of Johor. More specifically, it sits around 14 kilometres from Mersing and is nestled amongst other popular islands like Pulau Rawa and Pulau Tengah.
How to Get to Hujung Island
Ferry: The only way to get to Hujung Island is by riding the ferry that departs from Mersing Jetty. You can book a ticket online for a more convenient option You can also negotiate a private boat transfer with one of the local boat operators on the jetty if you want a more flexible option.
Island hopping: The best way to get to Hujung Island is by booking an island hopping package from Mersing. This way, all your boat rides will be accounted for and you can also stop by the neighbouring islands as well.
How to Get to Mersing Jetty
Train: There isn’t a direct line that connects Kuala Lumpur to Mersing, but you can ride a train going to Johor Bahru. From there, you can book a Grab or ride a bus going to the jetty.
Rental car: Driving a rental car is the most convenient way of getting to Mersing. If you’re coming from Kuala Lumpur, the estimated travel time would be 4 to 5 hours, just be sure to take the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and exit at Exit 184 Menuju Mersing/Endau.
What to Do in Hujung Island
Relax by the shore

You don’t have to exert much effort just to enjoy Hujung Island. Sometimes, all you need to do is sit down by the shore and bask in the relaxing atmosphere as you watch the beautiful panoramic views.
It also helps that the combination of beautiful white sand and cerulean waters of the beach is a spectacle to see, so you can spend hours just looking at it. While you’re at it, you can also go sunbathing to achieve that perfect summer tan look!
Splash around the shallow waters

The water that surrounds Hujung Island is generally calm, especially in the shallow parts, making it suitable for leisurely swimming. People of all ages can enjoy splashing around its stunning clear waters without worrying about strong waves crashing onto the shore.
Depending on the time you’re allotted during your island hopping package, you can easily spend a couple of hours enjoying these cool and calm waters. If you look hard enough, you can even see some beautiful marine life while you’re swimming, which brings us to our next point…
Snorkel with your friends and family

Hujung Island features bustling marine life and swimming simply won’t give it justice, which is why we highly recommend snorkelling while you’re here! This way, you can clearly see everything that this island’s waters have to offer, from schools of fish to coral reefs and more!
If you visit at the right time and season, you may even spot some rare species of colourful fish. Or if you’re really lucky, you can even find majestic sea turtles and sharks not far from the shore of the island.

It would be a shame to be at Hujung Island without stopping by its neighbouring islands, which honestly deserve the spotlight just as much. Fortunately, these floating lands of paradise are usually included if you book an island-hopping package from your travel agency!
One of the most perfect examples of this is the famous Tioman Island, which like Hujung, features a stunning beach. Furthermore, its waters are teeming with marine life as well so you can continue your snorkelling journey here to discover more species!

If you’re looking to indulge in Western dishes, then History 1948 Cafe & Bistro should be right up your alley! Whether it be for breakfast, lunch or dinner, you can count on this cafe/restaurant to serve you delicious and hearty dishes.
You can’t go wrong with any of their dishes but it’s always best to stick with their bestsellers, which include the ribs and fries, cheeseburger and fried chicken. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something that’s great for sharing, you can try their homemade pizza!
Furthermore, this cafe transforms into a lively bar come nighttime, offering great bar chow and equally amazing cold drinks. If you want our advice, we recommend spending your dinner here if you’re with your friends so that you can continue with your nightlife.

Of course, you can’t leave Mersing without trying some of its freshest seafood! For this need, we highly recommend dining at Loke Tien Yuen Restaurant, as they make the best out of Mersing’s teeming marine life.
We wanted to highlight their prawns specifically because they were huge and exceptionally lip-smacking, which we think is because of their tangy sauce. Aside from that, they also offer steamed fish and we discovered that this fresh meat pairs perfectly with their char siu!
If you’re not big into seafood, don’t worry! They also offer pork ribs and steamed chicken.

Sometimes, all it takes to satisfy someone’s hunger is some beautiful golden brown fried chicken, and that’s exactly what you’ll get in Marrybrown! This place is renowned for this dish so much so that they’ve been keeping the chain running since being founded back in 1981!
Since this is a Malaysian joint through and through, you’ll find that they’ve put a local spin on their menu! For instance, you can also find a delicious version of nasi lemak, which features the beloved tom yum chicken that they’re famous for.
Overall, this is a great option for when you just want to smother yourself with some good old-fashioned fast food where the prices are cheap and the dishes are tasty. Plus, the menu is quite varied so everyone from your group can be catered!

If you can’t get enough of the sea, then a beachfront hotel like Mersing Beach Resort should be right up your alley! It’s a great budget resort that doesn’t cut back on its quality, featuring spacious and amenity-filled rooms that can keep you comfy during your overnight stay.
As previously mentioned, it’s located by the beachfront so you can take a relaxing dip in the sea anytime you want! It also helps that the beach in question, Pantai Air Papan, is one of the most picturesque sights that Mersing has to offer.
Meanwhile, if you want to swim but want to take a break from saltwater, you can freely access the resort’s magnificent swimming pool! This pool is perfect for kids too, as it isn’t too deep—perfect for leisurely swims!
