Growing up, I wasn’t the biggest fan of pets mostly because of the lack of them in our household. However, it didn’t take much more than a visit to one of Penang’s cat cafes to convince me that I indeed needed a furbaby in my life!
Fast forward to today, I now have a pal who gets smooches (whether she likes it or not) whenever I get home. It wasn’t all smooth sailing though, as we had to go through from one pet shop to another and fortunately, Penang is home to tons of them!
So to help you find your next best friend, I’ve done you the service of compiling and reviewing some of the pet shops we checked out during our search. We’ve provided their highlights and lowlights to help you find the best one.

Chew Thean Yeang Aquatic & Pet immediately caught our attention because of its wide variety of pets. At the storefront, we were greeted by its adorable dogs and cats, all of whom we immediately fell in love with.
Deeper inside the store is their equally widely varied selection of aquatic animals as well as reptiles. A huge standout was the selection of fish, as their vibrant colours illuminated inside their respective tanks.
What’s more impressive is how many breeds they have. During our visit, dogs of all sizes from Pomeranians to Great Danes were present in their little homes.
We also appreciate that they’re able to provide a habitable environment for their pets so kudos to the maintenance team!
Our only problem with this shop is its above-average rates, which could throw off some potential buyers. Plus, it doesn’t help that you’d still have to pay parking fees even if you’re a store customer.
A paradise for kids
“This is not just a fish/pet shop, but a paradise for kids and fish lovers! The building is super well designed with different areas.
Not only you can watch beautiful diversified exotic fish, but you can also find other pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, tortoises, hamsters, snakes, iguanas and even meerkats!
Most areas are air-conditioned, only the ponds are open area. We can buy fish food to feed the koi at the pond, which is super fun for my daughter.
There are clean toilets provided, and also a few seats for those who are tired of walking.
We didn’t intend to buy any fish or pet here, but it’s a great place for spending time with family here, with both kids and elderly.”

Fluffy Dogs R Us lives up to its name, as entering it does feel like being inside a toy store only with puppies and dogs. As soon as we entered their doors, we immediately noticed how homey and well-maintained the store was, which is an instant A+ in our books.
Furthermore, seeing how happy and active these furbabies were immediately put a smile on our faces. Plus, it gave us an idea of just how well the staff members are taking care of these adorable pups.
We also love that they offer grooming services. During our visit, a large dog breed was being serviced and we could see just how well their staff members are when it comes to handling pets.
The store also features a wide variety of pet essentials from dog food to chew toys, treats, cages, shampoos, oils and more.
The only downside to visiting this pet shop is that you’ll only get to view and purchase dogs. However, they do offer pet essentials and grooming services for cats as well.

“Excellent service by Mervin and his groomers. They took in my new dog whom I just adopted from a shelter and really spruced her up! She had been caked in mud and dirt as she was living outdoors so washing her was no easy feat.
After 2 thorough baths, they dried and groomed her to perfection! She feels safe and comfortable here and I will definitely be returning for their services on a regular basis.”

When it comes to building your aquarium at home, Petz City Aquarium & Petstore is your best bet. They offer a wide variety of fish species that come in different shapes, sizes, colours and rarity—perfect for collectors!
We also have to give credit where credit is due because boy do their staff members do a great job at keeping their aquariums squeaky clean. Being this thorough with the cleaning process allows the fish to live a healthy life so the team immediately gets plus points for that.
Speaking of, we highly appreciate the friendliness of the staff members here. We’ve been here a couple of times and even though we haven’t made a single purchase yet, they never get tired of answering our questions.
However, we do wish that they could expand their selection of pets beyond different types of fish soon. They already offer various food and toys for pets so they might as well offer the pets themselves.

As a pet owner, I recognise the cost it takes to keep my pal’s tummy full 24/7. That’s why when I discovered E Pet Shop’s wide variety of super cheap kibbles, canned dog food and more, I jumped with glee because it was like discovering a life hack.
My costs went down by at least RM10 per week, and the best part is that the brands they’re offering aren’t shady at all. They’re always regularly well-stocked as well so we always leave with what we need when shopping here.
Aside from food, they also have a plethora of cages, toys, leashes and other stuff that both pets and pet owners will appreciate.
We also like how they opt to nurture dogs and cats and put them up for adoption, as it allows every furbaby to find a new home.
However, we do wish that they would create an official website soon to add to their legitimacy and to allow potential customers to browse their selection online. It also doesn’t help that their Facebook page isn’t updated.

Black Gold Pet Store was recommended to us by a friend when we were looking for pet-friendly cafes where we could chill alongside our furbaby. Upon arriving, we were greeted by a free-roaming cat and to our surprise, it was also a fully-fledged pet shop!
While we were here, we scored some good deals on their food, toys and even leashes! That’s just barely scratching the surface of what they offer here, however, as they also sell different types of reptiles and exotic pets.
They also offer an in-depth grooming service, which includes nail trimming, hair blowing, hairstyling and more. We didn’t avail this service but we were in awe of how professional their groomers were at doing their job.
The only red downside in our books is their inconsistent customer service. We didn’t experience anything bad ourselves but a handful of our interviewees noted some slight rudeness about the store’s staff members.
