9 Mac and Cheese Spots in KL That Will Satisfy Your Cheesiest Cravings

I have a soft spot for mac and cheese because, as a kid, I would always ask my parents to make it, and I must say, their recipe was unmatched. It was also a staple during college, as I mostly lived off instant mac and cheese, although I wouldn’t recommend you do the same.

Today, I seek mac and cheese here in Kuala Lumpur whenever I’m missing home or simply want to relive my childhood and teenage years. This led me to discover different spots around the city, from Western restaurants to local cafes, and more.

So if you’re looking for a place where you can indulge in mac and cheese made only the right way, you’ve clicked on the right link. Keep on reading to discover the best mac and cheese in KL!

Pizza Mansion is a local pizzeria that features a few branches across KL. They’re mostly known for their wide selection of pizza, but a close second would be their selection of extremely gooey mac and cheese!

There are two mainstays on their menu: truffle and classic macaroni and cheese, with both of them offering the same combination of Gouda, mozzarella, and cheddar. The former is our favourite, however, because of its added muskiness and umami flavour.

We also love the overall authentic pizzeria look they’re going for, with their clay oven, tiled walls and floors, and wooden furniture. However, we have to recommend getting a table in their al-fresco area if you want a more laid-back vibe with some Instaworthy corners.

Pro tip:

If you want to end your meal with a good cup of coffee, we recommend walking down the block to Feeka Coffee Roasters. They offer a wide array of espresso-based coffee, lattes, and pastries!

My inner child thanks me every time I treat myself to Killer Gourmet Burgers because it combines two of my favourite childhood dishes: burgers and mac and cheese! Here, mac and cheese won’t be served in a casserole, but instead as a filling for their absolute killer burgers.

A prime example is their “Jalapeno Mac”, which features a layer of fried mac and cheese in the middle of jalapeno peppers and mozzarella and cheddar cheese. You can also opt for the “Magmarr”, which is a gooey burger consisting of melted egg yolk and mac and cheese.

You can also opt for a chicken burger or even a vegetarian patty if you’re off meat! Regardless of which type of mac and cheese burger you get, however, you can’t miss out on their kimchi fries, which offer a different kind of zing than your typical barbeque-flavoured fries.

Pro tip:

If their location at TTDI is already full or out of the way from your itinerary, you can also check out their branches at The Gardens, The Pavillion, SS15, and the IOI Mall.

If you’re looking to get the best bang-for-your-buck mac and cheese, then Humble Chef should be on your radar. For less than RM15, you can enjoy a hearty serving of mac and cheese with all its stretchy glory—plus, you can customise your order!

For instance, you can choose which protein to add to the gooey and cheesy casserole, whether it be beef, spicy tuna, chicken, or lamb. If you’re staying away from meat, don’t worry because they also offer vegetables!

You can also choose between regular and spicy, but there’s no wrong choice here. From there, you can order their other offerings like pasta, quesadillas, and pita bread to make your meal extra filling!

Pro tip:

If you want to enjoy a meaty feast, we recommend ordering their ribeye steak as your main and treating their mac and cheese as your side instead!

Macaroni Food & Coffee is a great brunch/afternoon tea spot that offers hearty Western meals in KL at affordable prices. What we love about their mac and cheese is that it’s not literally just macaroni pasta and an overwhelming amount of melted cheese.

You can’t go wrong with any of their mac and cheese offerings, but if you want our advice, you MUST try their seafood variation. This dish doesn’t skimp out on toppings, featuring prawns, perfectly baked mussels, and tender squid rings—yum!

The restaurant also offers an Instaworthy interior that features an overall industrial vibe, with its dark wooden finishes and exposed metals. However, what caught our attention the most was that their lamps were made to look like opened canned goods!

Pro tip:

We recommend getting their fresh salmon pasta if you’re visiting with friends! It’s great for sharing (including the salmon chunks), and the sauce is rich and flavourful.

Although the Yellow Brick Road in KL doesn’t lead to a stunning Emerald City, it does offer one of the cheesiest mac and cheese in the capital, Cheesy Mr Mac. This dish looks picture-perfect; when you go in for a piece with your fork, you see the stretchy cheese.

It’s not your typical mac and cheese either, as it comes packed with mushrooms, bacon, and surprisingly, broccoli! The sauce itself is rich and has a more pronounced umami flavour than your typical cheese sauce, but don’t worry, it will still satisfy your cravings for something cheesy.

Even if you’re not getting their mac and cheese, we recommend checking out Yellow Brick Road if you’re looking for a quaint brunch cafe in KL. It offers a laid-back ambience and a beautiful interior that lets in tons of natural light thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows.

Pro tip:

You can conveniently reach this cafe by taking the MRT and getting off at the Semantan (SBK14) station. From there, you only have to go down the stairs, and you’ll immediately see the building where Yellow Brick Road is located.

Opera Cafe and Lounge should be right up your alley if you’re looking for a cute space to catch up with your friends over brunch. It will immediately charm you with its overall pink, gold, and floral theme, so be sure to take tons of photos while you’re here!

However, we’re pleased to find out that their dishes are more than just cute and small pastries you can take photos of, as they’re as hearty as they can get! For instance, their mac and cheese could easily feed two people while still being Instaworthy.

We also love how they use large gomiti, as it makes for a more filling bite. Plus, this type of pasta features the perfect pocket where all the gooey cheese can gather before bursting with flavours upon biting.

FatFire KL offers one of the most tantalising mac and cheeses in KL. It’s called “Mac Attack”, and it will immediately catch your eye with its vibrant cheese sauce. Furthermore, it’s garnished beautifully with fresh parsley, and you guessed it, more cheese!

It’s the ultimate comfort food, and it only gets better when paired with the other Western dishes on their menu. For instance, pairing it with a meaty and savoury dish like their classic rib-eye steak will further enhance the richness of its creamy cheese sauce!

Lastly, we recommend this place for those looking to experience a laid-back nightlife experience in KL after eating a hearty meal. They’re open until late and serve a wide variety of beers and mocktails.

Pro tip:

Since this restaurant has a more upscale vibe, we recommend taking your date here after visiting Immersify Kuala Lumpur together! It’s a cool art gallery where you can take cool and romantic pictures with digital and light art.

Pop’s Eatery Bangsar is the ultimate comfort food destination, and their mac and cheese is the prime reason why. For starters, it’s as creamy as mac and cheese go, and to top it all off, a hearty serving of fried chicken shop is laid on the bed of soft elbow macaroni.

However, that’s just scratching the surface of the restaurant’s menu, as they also offer other crowd-favourite dishes like chicken sandwich, carbonara, and Japanese katsu. Furthermore, they offer sweet treats, like our favourite, Nutella sourdough toast.

Even if you’re not craving mac and cheese, you can visit this place if you’re looking for a great coffee spot in the morning or afternoon. They offer a wide variety of coffee drinks as well as pastries—P.S.: get their burnt cheesecake.

Pro tip:

Get a table on their second floor, as it offers more natural sunlight, making it more laid-back and Instagrammable. Plus, it offers a more serene environment compared to the almost always busy downstairs area.

The Dark Horse Bar & Grill does baked mac and cheese like it’s their signature dish, which is crazy, considering how they offer steaks, pasta, and burgers.

Their mac and cheese features the perfect golden crust where the cheese develops that crunchy texture and slightly burnt flavour. If that isn’t enough to tantalise your tastebuds, they top it off with some sliced chicken breast!

Visiting this place after a long week is a treat in itself, as it offers cold beer and a wide variety of cocktails. Plus, they televise exciting live sporting events and offer games like darts and pool!

Pro tip:

Consider this place if you’re looking for a place where you can celebrate your loved ones’ birthdays or if you’re planning a corporate event. It features a big seating space, large serving sizes, fun games, and live music!
