Chew Thean Yeang Aquatic & Pet is one of the most well-known pet stores in Penang, having been in operation since 1963. We’ve been here a couple of times to pick up pet food and other tank essentials, and the experience has never disappointed me.
Visiting this shop is always a treat because it’s like a mini-zoo due to its sheer size and wide variety of animals. Alternatively, you can shop conveniently from home through their online store, but it doesn’t give the place justice.
Additionally, it’s not overwhelming to explore, as the products are well-organised, with each animal type and its respective essentials separated in their own sections. Plus, it helps that the staff members are always actively trying to help customers with what they’re looking for.
We also like that they offer exotic animals and other household pets like cats and dogs to cater to different types of customers.
As impressive as its selection is, however, we wish that they’d offer aquarium maintenance and aquascaping services.

Entrance is free, and parking is RM15. However, with the purchase of a minimum of RM15 from the shop, the parking fee can be waived at the cashier counter for 1 hour of parking.

PETZ CITY was recommended to us by a friend who recently purchased a beautiful betta fish. It allured us so much to check out the store’s entire selection ourselves, and we’re glad we did!
One thing we noticed immediately was the numerous tanks that housed their different fish species. The variety was great, but what impressed us more was the pristine tanks, which gave us assurance that their fish were healthy upon purchase.
We also interviewed the store’s regulars, and one thing that was commonly mentioned was the store’s owners. They were highlighted as being friendly and helpful, often providing honest recommendations on what product to purchase.
The only downside here is the slightly cramped and narrow space that makes browsing the shelves a bit unpleasant. Nonetheless, we appreciate how it’s maintained regularly and doesn’t feature the fishy smell that aquatic pet shops tend to have.

We discovered Funta World Aquatic & Pets when we were searching for fish food for our koi on Shoppee. Their selection of products caught our attention, so we made the drive to Baru Batu Maung to check their offerings in person.
Their selection of fish was impressive, featuring common freshwater species like black neon tetras to rarer ones like clown knife fish. All the fish they carry look healthy as well in the well-maintained fish tanks, so kudos to the team.
During our visit, we also noticed how friendly and helpful their staff members were, whether to us or other customers at that time. They were able to answer all questions without sounding impatient and even offered tips!
As for their aquarium services, they offer complete and convenient options, including designing, cleaning, and installation.
Our main gripe is the slightly inconvenient location, as it’s a bit of a drive away from George Town. Furthermore, we found the overall space of the shop a bit cramped.

KW Aquatic Supplies is a great place to visit if you’re starting out or looking to enhance your aquarium. It features an impressive selection of products, ranging from air pumps to filters and even tanks themselves!
We also love that they offer a separate section for aquascaping, where you can shop for design elements like driftwood, aquatic plants, colour stones, etc. Furthermore, they offer essentials like fish medicine and food, making it a one-stop shop.
The staff members here are always ready to help, and this was praised by many people we surveyed. For instance, many regulars voiced their appreciation for the expertise of their staff members who often give them advice on what to get based on a brief conversation.
In terms of fish selection, however, we can say that it’s inferior compared to other entries on this list. However, it’s still a great place to start an aquarium, as it offers common species like koi, betta fish, and goldfish.

Blue Ocean Aquatic Pets offers some of the most affordable fish in Penang, but the problem is that they only provide a limited selection. Furthermore, they don’t offer any aquascaping products, and even tanks themselves.
However, the shop is a great place to restock essentials such as fish food. Additionally, we believe it’s better for pet owners in general because it offers a wide range of pet needs, including dog bowls, catnip, and rabbit pellets.
We do want to commend the staff members, as the tanks they house their fish in are always kept in mint condition.
Speaking of, they were also one of the constant factors that were brought up during our interviews with the store’s regulars. The majority of the respondents stated how approachable the team was, answering any beginner questions in detail.
Lastly, we wanted to highlight how well organised the items in the store are, so it’s never really difficult to find what you’re looking for.
