Nowadays, it’s impossible to scroll down your Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok feed without encountering one of those tempting videos showcasing Western food at its finest. It’s also a coincidence that these clips pop out at night, leaving me craving all night long.

I’m not here to show off though, but instead, I wanted to share my favourite spots with you! From food courts to hole-in-the-wall, stalls and more, here are the best places to get Western food in KL!

Nothing screams Western food more than a massive cheeseburger, and that’s exactly what you’ll get when you dine in The BRGR. This restaurant serves some of the most ridiculous burgers in the city, including one that’s drenched in cheese sauce!

They also offer unique twists on the traditional burger by incorporating ingredients you wouldn’t typically think would pair well with this dish. For instance, they offer this one burger that features a soft-shell crab on top of the beef patty and surprisingly, it works!

To top it all off, these burgers are served alongside crispy curly fries—yum!

Pro tip:

While you’re here, be sure to stop by the nearby Setapak Central Mall! It’s one of the hottest shopping centres in KL where you can score amazing steals and deals.

As soon as you see the stars and stripes on its awning, you already know that Betty’s Midwest Kitchen offers an amazing selection of Western dishes.

We mentioned ribs because their marinated barbeque pork ribs are their bestsellers, and we think the secret is in the sauce itself since it uses root beer. Now, we’re not experts on the kitchen, but we do want to say that it leaves a sweet and distinct flavour on the skin of the ribs.

Aside from that, we also love their country-style fried chicken, which is everything you would expect from this style of cooking. From the golden brown skin to the mashed potatoes, green peas and more, everything about this dish is nailed to perfection!

Pro tip:

The easiest and cheapest way to get to this restaurant is by riding the bus and dropping off at the PJ2 Aman Suria station.

D’Fortune Western Cuisine & Cafe resembles those quaint coffee houses you’ll find in the streets of Paris. It offers outside seating, huge fans and long awnings complete with a bright strip light.

Aside from being a looker, however, this cafe is a solid spot to check out for those times when you just want to stuff your mouth with a huge slab of steak. The ones served here are slathered with savoury gravy and served alongside fries and vegetables—talk about value for money!

They also serve a delicious chicken chop drenched in mushroom soup, which is also a great option for when you just want to pig out on savoury dishes. Don’t worry though, as you can always balance it out with some house salad!

Pro tip:

If you want to end your meal on a sweet note, we recommend ordering their banana split sundae. It’s cute, cold, sweet and best of all, good for sharing!

The Magnificent Fish & Chips Bar is a fantastic Western spot that offers a wide array of classic dishes that even the pickiest eaters will love. As the name suggests, this restaurant specialises in the classic English dish that people love to feast on during football games, fish and chips!

They’ve got everything nailed down about this dish, from the flakiness of the barramundi fish to the crunchiness of the batter. Furthermore, the chips themselves are worth highlighting, as they’re served generously and are fried perfectly.

What makes the dish complete, however, is the tartare sauce, which is as homemade as it gets. All in all, it’s a great meal you can enjoy on its own or with a cold pint on the side.

Pro tip:

If you want to add more acidity to your fish and chips, we recommend squeezing the lemon on the batter before dipping the fish into the tartare sauce.

Huckleberry Damansara

Huckleberry is a quaint brunch/tea spot that my friends and I love to visit whenever we’re looking to catch up over some good food. They offer tons of dishes ranging from sweet to savoury, but I always come back for their croissant cube, which is super chocolatey!

Another reason why we love going here is because some of their dishes are great for sharing, more particularly their pizza and tacos. If you are going to order one meal per person, you can still expect the proportions to be huge, like with their salad, eggs benedict and more.

As for the place itself, it features this rustic and cosy ambience that adds to the overall dining experience. It’s also aesthetically pleasing enough to be worthy of being a backdrop for your Instagram pictures!

Pro tip:

If you want to eat something hearty that will give you that energy for the rest of the day, we recommend ordering one of their big plates! You can either go for their fish and chips or chicken pot pie.

If huge slabs of perfectly grilled steak are what you crave, then stopping by Flipp KL is one of the best things you can do in Kuala Lumpur. These steaks are prepared by their in-house gourmet cooks so you can expect the meat to be seared to perfection!

Steaks aside, they also offer a nice selection of pasta just in case the meat sweats start breaking out. Most notably, they serve an amazing carbonara pasta, which is slow-cooked and made the way Italians have intended using egg yolk!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for something to pair with your steak, we recommend ordering a side of their truffle mushroom soup and Caesar salad.

SOULed Out

Operating hours:

  • Sunday to Thursday: 12:00 PM to 12:00 AM
  • Friday and Saturday: 12:00 PM to 1:00 AM

Cost: $$

Menu

SOULed Out is the ultimate Western restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, offering several crowd-pleasers. We especially love their ribeye steak just because they’re tender enough that they fall off the bone—just the way we like it!

We also love their crispy chicken avocado sandwich as it adds a distinct flavour to the otherwise regular sandwich we’ve all grown and loved. The mushiness of the avocado does get some getting used to, but the crispiness of the chicken thigh will instantly set you right.

The overall vibrant atmosphere of the restaurant is also worth highlighting, as it makes a huge difference to the dining experience. It’s almost always filled with friends catching up, couples on a date and what have you, so you can always hear and feel the good vibes while you’re here.

Pro tip:

Consider coming here during game day because they televise Football matches on their huge flat-screen TVs!

Back Alley Pasta

Contact details: +60 3-2856 3065

Cost: $

Operating hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 5:30 to 10:00 PM

Back Alley Pasta is one of Kuala Lumpur’s best hidden gems—I mean, it literally says back alley in its name! It’s more than just a gimmick though, as this spot also doubles as one of the city’s most amazing places to get pasta.

There’s no wrong decision when it comes to their pasta but if you don’t know what to get, it’s always wise to stick to the best sellers. For instance, Tagliatelle Ragu won’t do you wrong with its cheesy parmigiana and pickled shallots.

Then once you’ve satisfied your pasta cravings, you can order one of their desserts. Personally, we love their apple crumb pie, as it’s welcoming and familiar.

Pro tip:

After eating, you can check out a nearby bar called Brussels Beer Cafe where you can find high-quality draft beer and a whole lot of bar chow!

Nipah at EQ

Operating hours: Daily from 6:30 AM to 11:00 PM

Menu

Technically, Nipag at EQ isn’t strictly a Western joint, as it also features a wide array of local delicacies, but hey, it’s just too good to leave out this list! Their buffet spread consists of several Western dishes like pizza, burgers, fries, and steaks—the works.

Honestly, a huge reason why I’ve decided to include it on this list is its mouth-watering dessert section. You can’t blame a person for loving cheesecake too much!

If you’re more of a seafood connoisseur, you’ll also get a kick out of this restaurant because it features prawns, oysters, mussels and more!

Pro tip:

Make sure to stop by the Aquaria KLCC before or after you eat here! It’s only a couple of minutes away from the restaurant and you won’t regret it!
