If you’re on the hunt for halal-friendly shawarma, we have just the place for you. Found on the ground floor of the WOLO Hotel in Bukit Bintang is a nice shawarma spot called Damascus, and don’t worry, you won’t have to book a stay to dine here!
We encountered this restaurant during one of our late-night cravings and trust us when we say that it was an absolute godsend! They had tons of Middle Eastern dishes at bay but we had to try their beef shawarma as the aroma piqued our attention.
It’s safe to say that it was the perfect decision as this delicious roll didn’t disappoint at all. The tender beef chunks inside were oozing with flavour and were only made better by the usual fix-ins of your typical shawarma such e.g. tomatoes and white onions.
We also appreciated their varied menu as they offered vegetarian options as well. We tried some of the dishes under this category for ourselves including the lentil soup and the Greek salad and they were alright.
By then, we realised that the main highlights of their restaurant were indeed the shawarma and kebab. But hey, at least all the items that we ordered were extremely affordable so it was still a win.
Overall, we had a great time here in Damascus, even though the place is crowded and we didn’t get to really bask in the ambience. In fact, the crowdedness was the only thing we didn’t like which is almost always a guarantee in this place which is good for them of course.
Pros
- Delicious shawarma
- Vegetarian options
- Wide variety of Middle Eastern dishes
Cons
- Long queue equals a slightly long serving time
- Limited space

During those rainy days in Kuala Lumpur, we love to visit Suki-Ya and treat ourselves to their delicious hot pot packages.
Personally, we think that this is hands-down one of the best hot pot spots in the capital. The variety and taste are here, and the best part is that they’re offered at a reasonable price!
Our go-to order here is the shabu-shabu and for good reason. This package contains razor-thin beef slices that are the perfect vessels for the flavour that the simmering konbu broth brings to the table.
Furthermore, their menu is inclusive as well! Aside from being halal-friendly, Suki-Ya has a separate section for vegetarians called the Healthy Bar. This is where we try to balance out our meat consumption with different kinds of vegetables and of course just to make us feel better.
Ambience-wise, we can’t really complain about anything as it was thoroughly clean and the interior design was simple yet elegant. We think it also helps that the restaurant itself is located inside the Pavillion which is one of the most beautiful malls in KL.
Since it’s a hot spot for hot pot, Suki-Ya is almost always packed with customers, especially during peak times. This was the only downside to our experience as we found ourselves waiting around 15 minutes before getting a table.
Plus, the packed nature of the restaurant also led the service to be slightly slower than we liked. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed our time here.
Pros
- Reasonably-priced hot pot packages
- Simple yet elegant interior decor
Cons
- Slightly slow service
- Long queues

“Overall satisfied the dine in. I chose KimChi and Japanese-style soup. Slices meats are of nice quality. Beef, chicken & lamb are served as your needs unlimited. I was sitting just right in the corner of the veggie and drink bar, I loved it. Drinks for lemongrass and green tea ice were free flow and the rest have to Top up as price listed. Seats in the restaurant were fully occupied within the 120mins when we dined in. Any excess time would be additional charged RM5 for 15mins block. Another shawarma joint we highly recommend is Halab Gate. With over five years under its belt, this eatery has long been established as the go-to place for shawarma lovers and we’re one of them!
If you want to try our regular, check out if the beef cheese shawarma is to your liking. We come back to this place from time to time just because of this gooey goodness and the best part is that it won’t burn a hole in your pocket!
As for its ambience, we loved how it’s a no-frills eatery, as it sets out to do one thing, which is to serve high-quality shawarma. It doesn’t feature indoor seating or any kind of fancy interior decor.
Instead, it’s more of a to-go spot where you can either eat their offerings at home or at the street, which is a pure al-fresco experience.
We also want to praise the staff of this small-time eatery, as each member is highly attentive, even during peak hours. Furthermore, they were friendly and accommodating–two of the most important things we look for in customer service.
The only thing we didn’t like about the restaurant was that its meat can sometimes be a bit too dry for our liking. It’s a small thing on paper, but it impacts the dish in a way that we think will rub other people the wrong way.
Nonetheless, we still love this place because of its world-class service, delicious shawarma and overall authentic dining experience.
Pros
- Authentic shawarma
- Cheap prices
- Street-side dining experience
Cons
- No indoor seating
- Dry meat

One restaurant that stood out during our hunt for the best halal dishes around Bukit Bintang is BBQ Nights. This is because the restaurant immediately piqued our attention because of the aroma coming from its premises.
When we went to the restaurant, our mouths were already watering, as different dishes were already being prepared such as kebab and hummus. Fortunately, we were able to grab a table and from there, we ordered lamp chops and hummus.
Starting with the lamb chops, we loved how well-seasoned they were. Each bite out of the tender meat of this dish was exploding with spice, which we personally love as opposed to those bland kebabs offered in other restaurants.
The hummus is also worth mentioning as it was the perfect balance between creamy and acidic thanks to the freshly-squeezed lemon. It had a generous serving of chickpeas which was also delicious and perfectly cooked.
As for the interior decor, there’s not much to look at, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s your typical eatery, complete with plastic chairs and tables that make the dining experience much more authentic.
It doesn’t have air-conditioning but it is compensated for by having an open layout making the premises well ventilated.
Expect this place to be packed, especially during lunchtime. Yes, this is good for their business, but the long waiting time can be a bit irritating, especially when you start smelling the dishes being served to other customers.
Pros
- Wide variety of halal-friendly dishes
- Cheap prices
- Attentive staff
Cons
- Lack of air-conditioning
- Overall ambience is subpar
- Hard to get tables

“We’ve been there twice, today and last night. We decided to come back because the food was surprisingly good and authentically tasty, even the Masala Chai tea. Delicious!! The portion is big and the price is worth it for what you get.
We’ve got cheese naan, hummus, chicken seekh kebab and chicken tikka… amazing!!
Last but not least the service has been kind and fast. If you are in the area we highly recommend giving it a try!!” —Sara S, Tripadvisor

Located in The Starhill Dining is a nice halal-friendly restaurant called Luk Yu Tea House. This amazing restaurant offers Chinese, Cantonese and Asian dishes, but with a twist!
One of our favourites from their menu is the pork-free dim sum. These delicious pockets of meaty goodness are paired great with their in-house sauce and soup, which makes the dish extra flavourful.
Another dish we recommend from their menu is fried radish cake. This soft and delectable dish gave off an amazing aroma and its savoury flavour was something special too.
As for its ambience, you can expect to experience all the things you would from a fine-dining restaurant. Fixed with elegant interior design elements such as low-hanging ceiling lights and plush chairs, you’ll immediately feel the classiness of this place.
The biggest and most glaring problem here, however, is the price. Since it’s a fine-dining establishment, you can expect to pay a little more as opposed to your regular restaurants.
This is fine once you put your head around the quality of food and overall dining experience, but for some people, the price may be a bit too much. Furthermore, we didn’t like how the service charge is a bit too pricey as well.
Pros
- Classy interior
- Delicious halal-friendly Chinese dishes
- Great service
Cons
- Expensive prices including service charge

This quaint cafe is oozing with charm, from its striking blue and white-coloured walls to its wooden finishes. It also gives off a cosy vibe, especially when you order one of their delicious coffee drinks.
As for their menu, it’s also worthy of praise thanks to its variety of halal-friendly offerings. We were initially overwhelmed when we saw their wide selection but we eventually ended up getting their pandan gm waffle.
When we think of pandan, we don’t immediately think of waffles but trying this dessert made us fans! The pandan flavour wasn’t too overpowering but instead, it complemented the usual waffle taste that we were accustomed to.
Aside from that, their coffee drinks were commendable as well. We ordered a frappe and a flat white, and both of them were spectacular, which made us think that they really know what they were doing.
Furthermore, we loved how the staff were accommodating throughout our entire stay at the cafe. It made us feel more comfortable with trying out what they had to offer.
Overall, it was a great experience dining here. The only problem that we encountered was its limited parking space which was gruelling.

“Do yourself a favour and visit this lovely place in Ampang. Although you have to order at the counter, the staff truly cares about your experience and is super attentive. The food is amazing as well. I ordered their salmon benefit, egg Florentine and an Aussie iced coffee. For starters, Al-Halabi Gourmet Restaurant is a beautiful restaurant. It’s one of those establishments where our dining experience was made much better just because of its ambience.

One thing we did notice, however, was that some of their dishes were inconsistent. For instance, the beef kebab was perfectly cooked but the chicken was a bit too dry for our liking.
The overall taste of their dishes was still good though. It’s just a small thing that we noticed during our time here and it didn’t ruin the experience at all.

One of the most renowned chains in the country is the famous steakhouse, The Ship. This is one of our favourite spots to dine in whenever we’re craving some juicy steaks but, unbeknownst to most people, this place is actually halal-friendly.
Personally, we love ordering the t-bone, as it has a huge chunk of meat. The ones they serve here are massive, juicy and seasoned perfectly, which makes their prices reasonable.
The establishment ensures that all the ingredients they use for their dishes are all halal. The only reason they’re not certified is that they serve wine.
Furthermore, we also inform our waiter to keep it halal when we order so that the chef doesn’t accidentally cook our steaks with wine. Speaking of their steaks, they’re the main stars of this restaurant.
We say this because we tried their chicken as well and it wasn’t near as good. The one that was served to us was dry and almost flavourless.
As for the place itself, it’s your typical steakhouse, which is either a good or bad thing depending on your preference. For us, this kind of look holds a special place in our hearts.
Complete with its wooden interior, dim lighting and ranch-like interior design, this type of steakhouse is a timeless look in our books.
Pros
- Halal steaks
- Timeless steakhouse interior design
- Cosy vibes
Cons
- Other dishes except for the steak are subpar
- Slightly pricey menu.

First of all, we want to talk about the place itself, as it’s worth highlighting. Right off the bat, it felt like we were visiting someone’s home because of both the interior and exterior designs.
It’s homey and we liked it a lot. Dining here felt natural and we loved the comfort brought by the cute plastic and wooden chairs–the staples of a quaint cafe/eatery.
As for their dishes, they were worth highlighting as well, as their menu featured a variety of local Malay classics. One dish that we immediately thought of ordering was the ayam pongteh which was essentially chicken that has been flavoured with fermented soybean paste and palm sugar.
The result is a delicious dish that has a perfect balance of sweet and savoury. We also paired this order with the sunshine nasi ulam which was this colourful plate of rice and 15 different vegetables and herbs.
We enjoyed our time here in Sarang Cookery. However, we felt like their menu could have used a bit more variety since every category only had a limited number of dishes under them.
Lastly, it’s worth noting that they’re not halal-certified just because they serve beer. We asked one of their friendly staff member about this and she confirmed that all their products are from halal suppliers.

The next time you get a chance to visit the Pavilion Mall, we recommend trying out this Lebanese restaurant called Al-Amar. We stumbled upon it while we were strolling inside the mall and it immediately caught our attention because of its halal-friendly open buffet.
We’re not too big on buffets but when we see something that has a spread like the one here at Al-Amar, we can’t help but be interested. Fortunately, we let our instincts guide us, as we enjoyed their wide array of Middle Eastern dishes.
We forgot everything that we took from the spread but one that stood out the most was the beef hummus.
This restaurant’s beef may be among the most tender and perfectly-seasoned ones we’ve tried in the entire country. Plus, it went well with their hummus which was well-made in its own right.
It’s also worth highlighting that the place comes with a Turkish ice cream stall. This is a huge hit for the kids, as it comes complete with the infamous prank where the ice cream man doesn’t immediately hand the cold and sweet treat.
Aside from the buffet, the restaurant also offers an ala carte menu but we have yet to try it. However, we saw the prices and it was a bit too high for our liking and we think a lot of people will say the same.
Then again, they do offer the most delicious and authentic Lebanese dishes in the capital. So, if you’re willing to spend that much on tasty some Middle Eastern grub, then this place is for you!
