A nice little bakery we recommend in Bangsar, KL is this spot called Jaslyn Cakes. This humble cake shop serves some of the tastiest and most good-looking cakes we’ve seen in the capital, which is a bold claim.

We love their simple yet elegant cakes, as they look like something straight out of the cookbook, which isn’t a bad thing at all. This also goes for the overall flavour of these cakes because of how perfectly balanced each one tastes.

Our favourite among their offerings is the mango shortcake because of its timeless flavour. We can say with confidence that they use fresh mangoes for this cake because of their sweetness and natural taste.

Furthermore, we appreciate how they offer each of their cakes in different sizes. This way, we can easily order one for personal cravings, birthday celebrations and more.

Ambience-wise, we love the cosy and homey vibes of their Bangsar branch. Also, the combination of wooden finishes and white walls is a classic look that we’ll never get tired of seeing.

The only thing we don’t like about this cake shop, however, is that the prices tend to be on the higher side. Although we understand that this cost is required to maintain the quality of their offerings, we can see how this can be a problem for some customers.

Pros

  • Wide variety of cakes
  • Use of fresh fruits
  • Cosy atmosphere

Cons

  • Slightly-pricey menu

Customer Reviews

The cake was delicious!

“Came here for some dessert and the cake was delicious! We’ve tried lemon custard cake and chocolate cake, and both simple-flavoured cakes were tasty. The taste was refreshing and doesn’t feel greasy at all. For the price, it was a bit pricy tho, but its good food, so def worth it!”—Dodo In Malaysia, Google Reviews

Some of the best cakes I’ve ever had in my life!

“They have great coffees and honestly some of the best cakes I’ve ever had in my life! The Pistachio cake was awesome. Red velvet cream cheese is good too (sponge cake layers that complement the rich cream cheese well) and the lemon drizzle cake was simple yet mind-blowing. It was surprising” —Jayys yayys, Google Reviews

If you’re looking for a great cake spot in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, we recommend checking out The Mandarin Cake Shop in the City Centre. This place is one of the most elegant cake shops we’ve ever seen in our lives, which makes sense as it’s located inside the Mandarin Oriental.

Fortunately, they offer more than just looks, as their cakes are quite amazing as well! As soon as you enter its doors, you’ll be greeted by their different offerings enclosed in their own little glass boxes to keep them chilled.

Seeing these delicious treats behind the glass never fails to make our mouths water because of how beautiful they look. Each cake looks like it’s been made to look like an attraction rather than a dessert, but trust us, it only gets better once you bite into them.

If you’re overwhelmed by the different cakes in this shop, we recommend going for some good ol’ chocolate truffle cake. When we tried this for the first time, we were surprised how it wasn’t overly sweet, which is a great thing!

This perfectly-balanced chocolatey flavour goes perfectly well with the spongey and luscious cake that they use as a base. Plus, you can also have them per slice or as a whole, so you can either grab them to-go or eat while basking under the elegant interior of the shop.

Obviously, the glaring problem of this cake shop would be its steep price. Even if we don’t think that it’s a viable place to go to for our cravings, it’s perfect for those special occasions when we want to spoil ourselves with something nice.

Pros

  • Elegant interior design
  • Beautifully-designed cakes
  • World-class service

Cons

  • Steep prices

One of our go-to places, when we’re craving homemade cakes, is Suchan Pastiserrie in Taman Gembira. There’s just something extremely homey about their cakes that makes us feel like we’ve been transported back to our childhood.

Our absolute favourite trait about their cakes is that they’re not as sweet, and we mean that in the best possible way. This is because the lack of the usual sugary taste is made up for by the full flavour that each cake features, which is 10x better than those that are just sweet.

Anything from their menu can easily take the cake (no pun intended) for being their best offering, but we love their blueberry cheesecake. Their version of this all-time classic is amazing, partly because of how generous they are with their fresh blueberries.

Plus, the delectable cream cheese that they have over the cake is something to die for. It perfectly wraps over the crumbly base, which by the way, houses a delicious blueberry filling.

We also recommend them because of their diverse menu. Not only do they serve other products such as tea, cookies, ice cream cakes and more, but they also offer them in keto and non-keto versions.

If we were to nitpick something we didn’t like about this place, however, it would be the inconsistency of their coffee drinks. Don’t get us wrong, most of the items we ordered from their menu were spectacular, but occasionally, we would be disappointed with their drinks.

Pros

  • Delicious homemade cakes
  • Widely-varied menu
  • Reasonable prices

Cons

  • Inconsistent taste
  • Subpar coffee

Cakes are absolutely gorgeous

“Simply just agree with those rated 5 stars. Cakes are absolutely gorgeous, less sweet and full of flavour. At least, my kids who are experienced in exploring cake houses gave really good comments. Will definitely pay next visit for it.” —cheon yow yee, Google Reviews

Comfy joint for a relaxing afternoon

“Went for the tiramisu. It didn’t disappoint. Taste great to eat with the jam. Had the keto cheesecake also but didn’t quite like it. As for the setup, it’s aged but cozy. Quite a comfy joint for a relaxing afternoon. The service was very friendly.” —Desmond Ooi, Google Reviews

If you’re ever in Bangsar Village and you’re craving a slice of cake, drop by Bisou Bake Shop BV. This quaint spot is one of the best cake places in the capital because of the sheer variety they have on their menu.

When we checked their menu, we were initially overwhelmed by the different cakes and pastries. We eventually settled for their signature red velvet cake because of how beautiful it looked from their counter.

Fortunately, we made the right decision, as this cake had the right amount of sweetness that would make other red velvet cakes ashamed. Plus, the creamy icing perfectly complemented the distinct flavour of this cake, creating a balanced flavour that’s hard to come by these days.

Meanwhile, if you’re not quite sure which one to order from their menu, we recommend trying their 6-inch mixed slice cake. This cake is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, as it combines eight slices from different flavours to create this ultimate dessert.

Our only gripe with this particular branch is that it’s located within a food court, which kind of breaks the cosy vibes that they got going on. Nonetheless, we still love this place for its wide variety of cakes and other pastries.

Pros

  • Wide variety of cakes
  • Perfectly-balanced flavour

Cons

  • Slightly slow customer service
  • Subpar ambience

Bisou is the best!

“Bisou is the best! My last-minute valentines order was accommodated with a dedicated service and of course their very delicious cupcake. I will definitely order from them again. Thank you for all the arrangements, I really appreciate it.” —Jana Lim-Tai, Google Reviews

I’m blown away

“Wow, delicious cupcakes. I’m blown away. Was worried it’ll be too sweet and the cake basic, but each cupcake is like a mini cake! Wow factor on presentation, and good job on taste too! I love their cupcakes very much, not only their attractive decorations, but their taste is also delicious, moist and not so sweet. Only a bit pricey for cheese frosting cupcakes but what do to? If it is so good, can’t resist. Better to buy 6 in 1 go is cheaper than 1 pc.” —Rachel Log

You’ll immediately see why they’re one of the best in the country just because of the sheer variety of cakes they offer. Whether we’re looking for something fruity or something chocolatey, we can always count on this establishment to deliver.

The flavour of these strawberries goes perfectly well with the creamy frosting as well as the spongey cake. Lastly, it’s also worth mentioning that their cakes are extremely moist, making them a joy to eat.
