Cheong Kee Wan Tan Mee is the epitome of casual-style dining in Ipoh. It’s a no-frills roadside eatery, with round tables, plastic chairs, and fans—so rustic! You’re not here to admire the ambience, because the main highlight is the food!

They’re one of the best places that offer authentic Ipoh wantan mee (complete with crunchy bean sprouts!), and the best part is that you don’t have to spend more than RM5!

Their wantan mee features perfectly cooked springy noodles coated with their signature dark sauce. The wontons are equally springy, and we appreciate that the restaurant doesn’t skimp out on the meat fillings.

Pro tip:

Get to this spot a few minutes before they open their doors because it can get crowded quickly. This is especially important if you’re planning on dining in, as they have limited tables.

Aside from being a solid wantan mee spot, You & Mee Ipoh Noodle doubles as a chill hangout spot. It has a charming cafe-like interior—wooden furniture, beautiful windows, and cute red lanterns.

This place also offers one of the most varied wantan mee selections we’ve seen in Ipoh. For starters, they offer them in either dry or soup wantan mee, with the former featuring perfectly charred pork and the latter having a flavourful broth with tender dumplings.

We were also captivated by their dry curry wantan mee, which features a tangy sauce that perfectly complements the springy noodles, leeks, and wontons. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something with more kick, the spicy soup mala wantan mee should be right up your alley.

Pro tip:

If you want to try their dry noodles but still want to sip on their delicious broth, pair your order with their wan tan soup add-on. Alternatively, you can get their deep-fried dumplings and pair them with the soup wantan mee if you want it the other way around!

Jalan Datoh Wantan Mee is the perfect spot if you’re looking to get your quick fix of wantan mee. They’re open early in the morning, and trust me when I say there’s no better way to start your day than with a bowl of their wantan mee soup!

For starters, the broth is extremely flavourful thanks to the pork wontons that have been soaking in the pot for several hours—plus, a little MSG won’t hurt anybody. Furthermore, the wontons themselves are satisfying to eat because of their springiness and abundance of fillings!

Our favourite thing about this place is their dry wantan noodles because they don’t come with that gravy you’ll usually find in wantan mee spots. Moreover, the noodles are stir-fried and topped with fresh green onions—yum!

Pro tip:

You can also order their fried dumplings to add more crunch to every bite of your noodles.

Mee Wantan Ipoh should be on your radar if you’re looking for cheap but delicious wantan mee in Ipoh. Granted that they don’t feature fancy interior decor and air conditioning, it’s still a great and authentic way to eat this dish, as you’ll be seated al-fresco style underneath their tents.

This spot also offers three types of wantan mee, all of which taste amazing! The first one is the traditional dry wantan mee, which features savoury stir-fried noodles, two pieces of deep-fried wontons, and soy sauce for dipping.

They also offer a dry wantan noodle with roasted ayam, which is our favourite because of the perfect smokiness of the chicken—plus, it comes with four fried dumplings! The last version is the mee wantan ayam panggang, which features grilled chicken and mushrooms as toppings.

Pro tip:

If you want to try a different meat from chicken, we recommend ordering their smoked duck! It’s perfect roasted flavour pairs well with the already savoury and springy noodles of the wantan mee.

Whether you’re on the hunt for wantan mee or not, Old Town Kitchen Cafe should be on your itinerary because of its wide array of local delights. From sotong to fried fish and nasi lemak, you’ll find some of the cuisine’s staples here!

However, the delectable wantan mee, both its dry and wet forms, keeps us returning to this place. Both versions feature springy noodles, with the former leaning into a more savoury flavour and the latter being more hearty thanks to its flavourful broth.

Old Town Kitchen Cafe is also a chill and Instaworthy hangout spot that features vintage decor, including a retro beetle car and scooter! And with every hangout spot, this place also serves a wide array of refreshing drinks!

Pro tip:

If you want to diversify your order, you can get their side of Korean sauce chicken wings as your starters! They also offer this in chicken popcorn form if you don’t want to put effort in taking the meat out of the bones.

Restoran New Holly Wood offers a varied menu consisting of both Chinese and Malaysian dishes. This is why you can pair your wantan mee with other Malay dishes like char kway teow to add flavours of roasted pork to your hearty soup.

One of our favourite things about their wantan mee is how delicate the wrapper is, which makes for a satisfying bite. Moreover, it’s filled to the brim with meat, which bursts with flavours that you can follow up with a quick slurp of their springy noodles.

It doesn’t offer much in terms of interior decor, but its bustling ambience entirely makes up for it. Plus, the open layout paired with the powerful ceiling fans creates a pleasant dining experience despite the lack of air conditioning.

Pro tip:

If you want to wash away the savoury flavours from your mouth, you can cross the street to Hillrise Coffee 16 and enjoy their delicious sweet drinks and desserts. If you want our advice, get a slice of their strawberry cake!
