11 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur

One of the struggles that we hear from vegetarians in Kuala Lumpur is that they don’t have enough restaurants that offer delicious dishes that cater to their diets.

Whenever we hear this, we can’t help but think otherwise as we can name a bunch of spots that offer amazing vegetarian dishes off the top of our heads. In fact, most of them can be found in KL!

In this blog, we’re settling the problem that most vegetarians run into. Listed below are restaurants that we’ve tried first hand along with our two cents – feel free to check them out!

How We Picked the Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Kuala Lumpur

We’ve carefully curated this list by grading each restaurant we found in Kuala Lumpur based on the following factors:

Menu – Of course, the most important factor to consider is the establishment’s menu which we further graded based on the taste and variety of the food.
Affordability – We checked if the prices that the establishment was offering were reasonable based on the actual food that arrived on our table.
Establishment – We also wanted to find restaurants that offer a nice and comfortable dining experience based on their cleanliness and interior decorations.
Customer Service – Lastly, we believe that great customer service is the core of a good dining experience. That’s why we decided to only choose restaurants that had friendly and speedy staff members.

A quaint cafe we’ve found in Kuala Lumpur that offers great vegetarian options is RGB, also known as Rather Good Beans.

The first time we saw this establishment, we immediately gravitated towards it, thanks to its charming minimalist interior and exterior decor. It featured white walls which served as great canvas for some strikingly coloured tables, chairs and counters.

It was a good thing that their exterior design led us to enter the restaurant as we were greeted with one of the most varied vegetarian menus we’d ever seen! We visited during the morning so we ordered two vegetarian breakfast dishes but they also offered pizzas, pasta and more.

The first dish we ordered was the Avocado Cheddar Melt Toast which was served alongside mushrooms and scrambled eggs. We loved the overall flavour and texture combination of this dish, especially the avocado which, in our opinion, was perfectly seasoned.

We also tried out their Spinach Garlic Cheese Omelette & Toast which we enjoyed as well! It can be served alongside bacon but we decided to go with tempe or tempeh to keep it vegetarian-friendly.

To top off our breakfast orders, we also tried their Belgian mocha and flat white coffee. Overall, these two drinks were decent but we’ve tried better ones around Kuala Lumpur for cheaper prices.

Speaking of prices, RGB’s menu tends to lean toward the pricier side, which can rub off some people the wrong way. Personally, we thought that the prices were justified because of the generous portions that we were getting but still, this can be a make-or-break factor for others.

Pros

  • Hip and cosy ambience
  • Generous servings
  • Wide variety of vegetarian options

Cons

  • Subpar coffee drinks
  • Slightly pricey menu

“Love the space here. If you’re into clean eating/vegetarian/vegan then this place suits you. Could barely taste the salt in my big breakfast, which I’m not complaining about. Portions are generous. Additionally, it’s rare to have lamb sausage options, which they have. The coffee is decent. The price is at the higher end. Service was quick.” —Wirda Ashikin, Google Reviews

One fine-dining restaurant we recommend you try in Kuala Lumpur when you’re looking to splurge on food is Nero Nero. We still remember the first time we went to this spot as it was a great place to celebrate a special milestone.

Several things stood out from our experience here years ago such as its classy interior decor, excellent customer service and delicious dishes.

However, one thing that caught us by surprise was how they catered to vegetarians through their expansive menu. Plus, the waiter was friendly enough to walk us through the different vegetarian options, so A+ for that!

We opted to get their Margherita pizza which we enjoyed so much because of how fresh the ingredients tasted, from the tomatoes to the basil and mozzarella cheese. It was also cooked to our liking – kind of burnt to a slight crisp.

There were also several salad options but we eventually ended up ordering the burrata. This salad consisted of juicy cherry tomatoes, rocket leaves, burrata cheese, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil to top it all off.

Of course, the main downside of eating in this restaurant is its pricey menu which a lot of people may not be willing to pay for even if they have the means to do so. However, we do recommend this place for those special occasions as it’s an entire dining experience in itself.

Pros

  • Classy fine-dining experience
  • Delicious vegetarian dishes
  • Widely-varied menu
  • Impressive wine collection

Cons

  • Expensive menu

Special mention to the king prawn risotto – it was out of this world. Off the menu, but executed so well. The ambience of the restaurant is also very comforting; seating comfortable and service attentive.” —Eric Tan, Google Reviews

Chakit Bunting Bintang is a great food hub to find unique eateries. A prime example of this is Dining in the Dark KL, a restaurant where customers have to wear blindfolds while they’re eating – are you intrigued yet?

When we first heard of this, we thought it was crazy and just another “gimmicky” restaurant. But, once we tried it for ourselves, it made total sense as to why they do this.

By the time we arrived at the restaurant, we were already thrilled to get started. However, what sold us even further was that they offered a separate course for vegetarians.

All we had to do was advise them beforehand about our diet requests and they were more than happy to abide by them.

There is one final catch, however, and that was we didn’t know what we were going to be served with until the final reveal. This added an extra layer of excitement to the already thrilling dining experience that we signed up for the moment we entered the restaurant.

We also loved how they weren’t overly reliant on their gimmick of being an “experience for the senses”. Even if you strip away the blind dining experience, we still think that this restaurant can stand on its own thanks to its delicious dishes.

Not gonna lie, it was a bit scary at first since we didn’t know what we were putting in our mouths. However, we found that it was actually interesting how the taste, as well as the aroma, was enhanced just because our visions were temporarily impaired.

Also, finding our utensils and figuring out where the dish was located on our plates was a fun experience in itself. The fact that we were with our friends made it even funnier, as even though we didn’t see what was happening, we kept hearing each other’s laughs.

The only thing that we see bothering future customers about this place is the price range. We didn’t expect the establishment to have such high prices but then again, we did get served delicious food and experienced a unique dining experience.

Pros

  • Friendly customer service
  • Unique pitch-black dining experience
  • Delicious dishes
  • Custom courses for vegetarians.

Cons

  • Slightly expensive price range
  • Limited operating hours

“An establishment that enables the blind to gain employment. We had a surprise birthday dinner here for a friend. Quite an experience… the menu is made known after all is done. It’s an interesting menu that we either get partially an ingredient or two but many others will throw the scent off. Wine pairing is optional. To maintain the experience no cameras are allowed inside the dining area. They are kept in a locker throughout.

The good thing is the menu is regularly altered to keep the dining experience fresh.” —David Fu, Tripadvisor

Whenever we’re out with our non-vegetarian friends and we want to eat all the food we want, we go to the Latest Recipe buffet at Le Méridien. In this all-you-can-eat restaurant, all our cravings are satisfied as they have a wide array of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

They offered various vegetarian dishes, but one that we wanted to highlight was the stir-fried rice. This dish had the perfect balance of taste between garlic, soy sauce, carrots and green peace, and was the perfect side dish for all the other offerings in the buffet.

We also tried their roti canai which was amazing as well! It featured the perfect texture of being not too crispy but not too soft at the same time.

Ambience-wise, the place is what you’ll expect from a restaurant that’s attached to a world-class hotel. From low-hanging lighting to sophisticated interior design elements and more, eating here feels like royalty.

As for its downsides, the most obvious one is its steep price – but we already expected it before dining here because of its location. On top of that, they also offered a myriad of dishes so we thought that they had to charge more to compensate for the cost of the buffet itself.

Aside from the price range, we also felt that the establishment featured a lacklustre customer service. We found ourselves following up on several of our requests, but at the same time, they were very courteous.

Pros

  • Wide variety of dishes from different cuisines
  • Expansive vegetarian options
  • Classy interior decor

Cons

  • Expensive price point
  • Slightly slow service

One of our go-to vegetarian restaurants in Kuala Lumpur is this place called The Hungry Tapir located in Jalan Petaling. We love going back to this restaurant as it’s solely targeted towards people with different kinds of diets.

Aside from vegetarian options, they also offer keto-friendly, gluten-free and other dishes that don’t have specific ingredients in them – plus points for inclusivity in our books!

What we love the most about this place is its creative menu. It puts the fun in vegetarian dishes by featuring unique twists on otherwise regular meals.

One of our favourites is the “fried cheeken” which as you may have guessed from its name tries to mimic the all-time classic, fried chicken. The twist here is that to make it vegetarian-friendly, they replaced chicken meat with oyster mushrooms.

Even though we knew what we would be getting, our minds and tastebuds kept on saying that it was real chicken. Plus, the homemade mustard mayo was a perfect sauce for this delicious finger food!

The interior decor is worth mentioning too as it featured this cool, hip and rustic vibe with its exposed brick walls, wooden tables and chairs, etc. It was also clean which is always an instant A+ for us.

Moving over to its downsides, there were only two things that slightly bothered us. Firstly, we thought that the price was a bit too steep for the portions that we were getting.

Secondly, the establishment features a limited space that can get filled up with customers in a snap. Although this is a good problem for them, some customers may get frustrated with having to wait until a table is freed up.

Pros

  • Delicious alternatives for non-vegetarian dishes
  • Fun menu
  • Cool interior design

Cons

  • Limited space
  • Slightly unreasonable prices

Great Place to eat.

“Very fortunate to get a table for 6. The menu is full of lovely dishes. We had a selection of dishes, Nasi Lemak, Jungle Laksa, Phish Cakes, and Roti Cansl as well as some cold beers and mocktails. As a solo traveller, it is great to talk to the locals! I got a drink, an appetizer, and a salad and it was too much food for me. But, it was all tasty. Their menu has quite innovative and unique vegan/vegetarian food. I loved the atmosphere and decor. Would love to visit again sometime!” —Sydney Ott, Google Reviews

Sometimes, the vegetarian lifestyle makes us miss our favourite dishes. Thankfully, there are several restaurants nowadays that offer plant-based versions of these all-time classics and that’s where Sala comes in.

We’re glad we found this restaurant during one of our food crawls in Kuala Lumpur as they offered one of the most varied plant-based menus we’ve seen. We were surprised and delighted at the same time when we saw their Mexican, American and International offerings.

Sala
Photo from: https://www.facebook.com/salamalaysia/

They have this thing on their menu where we can create our own burrito and it’s perfect for us as we’re always looking for something new to eat. The selection of things we could change was impressively varied but we think we’ve figured out the ultimate combination.

If you want our take on the best plant-based burrito, start by choosing barbeque jackfruit as your main filling and chilli for your beans. From there, we either get white or purple cabbage for our veggies and to top it all off, we get that generous drizzle of sour cream.

If we were to nitpick some of the things we didn’t like, the main one would be the parking experience as it was dreadful. Furthermore, we felt like the staff could use some improvement in terms of their speed.

Overall, we still enjoyed our experience with Sala. The restaurant offered a great ambience, delicious imitations of classic dishes and most importantly, reasonable prices.

Pros

  • Accurate imitations of delicious Mexican food
  • Reasonable prices
  • Clean interior

Cons

  • Parking can be difficult, especially during peak times

“Visited on a weekday, about 19:00. Service seems to have improved since I visited it last year. The person taking our order was patient to explain to us the dishes and inform us of the items that are unavailable.

The environment is relaxing, clean and neat. The food was good, the chocolate cake was rich. Finding a car park spot can be challenging though. The lots in front of the eatery are for valet parking” —Piotr Leong, Google Reviews

Another go-to outlet of ours when we’re craving plant-based dishes is Simple Life Healthy Vegetarian Restaurant. This chain has 12 different branches across the country, but our favourite is the one at the Gardens Mall just because of its accessibility.

One of the reasons why this restaurant has been our go-to for the longest time is because we think they’ve mastered the fusion of Chinese and Thai cuisine. Plus, they serve a myriad of vegetarian options that always leaves us satisfied in terms of taste and value for money.

Among their expansive menu, we always choose from their set meals just because we think it offers the best value for money. They have this set that contains oyster mushrooms, fried rice, salad and the soup of the day which is a huge steal in our opinion.

Ambience-wise, it definitely lives up to its name. This is because simple is also what we would describe its interior decor and we mean that in the best possible way.

Featuring wooden finishes and a clean colour palette, Simple Life gives off a relaxing vibe that makes dining here all the more enjoyable.

One thing we don’t like about the establishment, however, is their service as they can sometimes be a bit slow. This is especially true once the crowd starts coming in during lunch time, so be sure to be prepared for that.

A nice and cosy spot that we found while wandering Kuala Lumpur was Loving Cafe. We spent a peaceful afternoon here, and it’s safe to say that we’re going to add this cafe to our list of vegetarian spots in KL.

Right off the bat, we were lured in by the look and feel of the cafe itself. We just love the matcha green walls and the overall hip aesthetic it got going on.

Fortunately, we didn’t get lured into something we didn’t like as we were immediately impressed with their vegan/vegetarian menu. They offered tons of different plant-based dishes, but we eventually ended up ordering their famous veggie burger.

After devouring the burger in what felt like just a couple of minutes, we can safely say that it was indeed a tasty sandwich. Although there are still some remnants of non-meat ingredients, the taste and feel of the patty itself were lightyears away compared to any other veggie burger.

We also treated ourselves to some of their vegan-friendly desserts which served as the perfect way to cap off our experience at the cafe. The matcha ice cream, in particular, is worth highlighting as it was nailed to a tee with just the right amount of creaminess.

As for the downsides of our experience at Loving Cafe, there were two things that we noticed. Firstly, we felt that some of the items from their menu aren’t reasonably priced as the others.

Secondly, we think that they could improve their delivery time. It wasn’t slow to the point where we grew impatient, but it was noticeable, especially considering that the place wasn’t as packed when we visited.

Pros

  • Cosy ambience
  • Delicious plant-based dishes
  • Variety of options

Cons

  • Slightly slow service
  • Some items from their menu are pricier than they should be

The cafe is owned by a couple and their vegan dog who take great pride in what they plate. If you are a vegan or anyone who enjoys plant-based food this cafe is a must try!”—Sandie728, Tripadvisor

Going on food crawls in Kuala Lumpur is an absolute blast. During one of our many hunts for the best restaurants in town, we came across this place called ‘Hijau’ which is the Malay and Indonesian word for green.

We were already interested then, but what drew us closer was their menu, which featured a lot of mouth-watering vegetarian and halal dishes. One dish that we wanted to highlight was the tempeh chips, as they were seasoned perfectly and addicting to eat.

The staff was friendly, too, and they were nice to walk us through some of the items on their menu that we weren’t familiar with.

As for its interior decor, we couldn’t really judge it as it was located inside a food court which does come with a pro and a con. Starting with the good, you’ll have plenty of seats to choose from, with various tables that can accommodate different groups.

On the other hand, there is the disadvantage of not having your own space as you would inside a restaurant. Fortunately, the food court that serves as the home of this establishment isn’t too shabby at all and features a nice interior decor.

The only thing that we didn’t like during our dining experience was the price point, as we felt that they were a bit too expensive compared to what we were getting.

Don’t get us wrong, the food tasted good, and the serving was generous. However, some prices on their menu were simply too high for us.

Pros

  • Wide variety of vegetarian options
  • Friendly staff
  • Plenty of seats

Cons

  • The food court can be too packed sometimes
  • Pricey menu

Whenever we crave delicious Indian food, one of the places that we immediately think of is Khan’s Indian Cuisine, and for good reason. For starters, the location of the restaurant is convenient as it’s inside The Sphere, a famous mall in the capital.

Also, we love this place because of its tasty offerings that are both vegetarian and vegan-friendly. They have a plethora of vegetarian mains but one dish that we keep coming back for is the paneer tikka masala and aloo gobi mutter.

Both these dishes are seasoned nicely and cooked to perfection. It’s not too spicy but nowhere near bland as well which is the balance we’re looking for in an Indian dish.

Their customer service is commendable as well as we’re always greeted with smiles whenever we dine here. We love this kind of hospitality and it’s a huge reason why this place is always in our options whenever we’re looking to eat somewhere that serves authentic Indian dishes.

The first time we went here, we were surprised to see that the prices were above average. However, Once we finished our plates and basked in the ambience of their classy restaurant, we immediately understood why they charged these prices.

Lastly, we recommend going in early, especially if you’re planning to have your lunch here as the place gets packed as soon as the doors open. When this happens, you may find yourself having to settle for one of their tables outside.

Pros

  • Classy interior
  • Impressive selection of vegetarian options

Cons

  • Above average prices

first option for the whole 2 weeks I spent in Malaysia.

This restaurant is the best, loved it. Classy, delicious food, great food portion, lovely staff, and a very nice atmosphere. And although it is a classy restaurant, the prices are very reasonable.”—J_mohamed144, Tripadvisor

“Came here for lunch with my colleagues and boy can it get really crazy. Parking here is insane! So u probably have to set aside time to look for a spot and this restaurant is super packed during lunch hours so it’s better to make reservations otherwise you might end up sitting in the open-air area.

Service is excellent and so was the food. The menu is extensive and u would be spoilt for choices. The ambience is acceptable but with such large crowds, you probably won’t get to appreciate that very much. Overall a decent experience. Take note its prices are above average but considering the location and quality of food it’s acceptable”—Vhailor, Google Reviews

One restaurant in Kuala Lumpur that’s famous for offering quality vegetarian dishes at an affordable price is Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant. We heard a lot about it so it’s a no-brainer to try it out for ourselves and thankfully we did.

Nature’s Vegetarian Restaurant does a great job of creating authentic Asian dishes that can be eaten and enjoyed by vegetarians. At first glance, we thought that it was your typical run-of-the-mill Chinese eatery that offers classic dishes such as dim sum, dumplings, etc.

However, we were surprised to see that they take out the meat in these dishes and substitute them with vegetarian-friendly ingredients.

A prime example of this is the aforementioned dim sum where instead of filling them with meat, they used tofu, seaweed and mushroom. It may not seem as appetising as the real thing but trust us, it was just as flavourful, if not better than meat-based dim sum.

What we loved about the restaurant, even more, was their affordable prices. We were tired of having to pay extra charges just to enjoy vegetarian meals and this restaurant definitely scratched this itch for us.

There is one thing that we didn’t like about the place and that is there were no reservations allowed. This can sometimes be frustrating, especially considering that their store gets crowded way too quickly as soon as they open.

Pros

  • Cheap menu
  • Authentic Asian dishes
  • Generous servings

Cons

  • Lack of reservation option
  • Interior decor could use some updating

BEST vegetarian dim sum

“I have frequented this place many times, as my whole family is vegetarian and never once have we been disappointed. We are constantly trying and discovering new dishes on their menu – all as delicious as the next one.

They serve dim sum in the AM until about 4-5 pm in the evening and this is what we usually go for because they have an AMAZING variety of FULLY VEG dim sum – about 40-50!

They have equally amazing main dishes too such as their fried rice, noodles, veg mutton curry and tofu. The staff are super friendly, helpful and professional and the ambience of the restaurant is so dignified, yet you feel like you are comfortable having dinner at home. 10/10 would recommend, even to non-vegetarian diners!”—payal88s, Tripadvisor

Vegetarian Dim Sum

“Our favourite in this place. DimSum. Other dishes can be found anywhere but vegetarian dim sum is non-existent. It’s nice and delicious as well. Others offerings are nice as well especially the Curry, Assam Fish, and Black Bean bitter gourd. Crowded with people on weekends.”—Chanwengcheong, Google Reviews
