10 Restaurants That Serve the Best and Fluffiest Pancakes in Malaysia

When people talk about diverse breakfast and brunch dishes, they often overlook pancakes, which is a shame, as they can instantly brighten one’s morning no matter their form! They can be topped with fruits, chocolate chips, ice cream, butter, etc., all while being enjoyable.

Let’s be real, though, they’re satisfactory to eat at any time of day, especially when you’re craving comfort food. As someone who lives a busy 9-to-5, this dish has saved my sanity more times than I could remember!

So, whether you’re looking for a fantastic brunch spot in Kuala Lumpur or just want to sample pancakes in Malaysia, you’re in the right place! Here are some of the country’s best pancake spots that have blown me away with their fantastic stacks:

LOKL Coffee Co. is a cosy cafe that offers travellers a laid-back spot to chill and take Instaworthy photos. It features a rustic interior, consisting of low-hanging light fixtures, exposed beams, wooden floors, and cement walls that instantly provide a sense of cosiness.

They offer a wide variety of breakfast/brunch staples, but their pancakes easily steal the show because of their unmatched fluffiness. We also love the unique flavour they achieve by adding whipped coconut cream, pecan, and gula melaka (palm sugar) syrup.

If you’re looking for something similar to pancakes but want a subtle crispness, we also recommend their waffles. You can either go the savoury route and get them alongside fried chicken or satisfy your sweet tooth by adding gelato and fried bananas!

Pro tip:

You can easily get here by taking the bus and getting off at the KL100 BackHome Hostel station. This will take you directly in front of the cafe!

Feeka Coffee Roasters is one of my go-to cafes in KL purely because of their coffee selection, featuring espresso, brewed, and cold brew. They also offer various variations from each category, including Americano, dirty matcha, macchiato, and more.

The same variety can be said regarding their pancakes as well! For instance, one of our favourites from their menu is the berry pancakes, which is a stack that’s topped with freshly sliced strawberries and blueberry jam.

They also offer lemon ricotta pancakes, which are the perfect balance between zesty and sweet. It also comes with a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream, which, when paired with the fluffy pancakes, makes for a satisfying bite!

Pro tip:

Check out their official Instagram to see their latest coffee creations and series that you won’t typically see on their online menu.

The Red Beanbag is among the top Instaworthy brunch spots in Petaling Jaya, with its high ceilings, warm lighting, and wooden furniture. We also love the massive windows found on both floors, as they allow for natural light to come in.

However, what we adore the most about this place is its PB&J pancake, which is exactly what it sounds like. The only difference it has with the classic sandwich is that its jam is replaced with compost and fresh strawberries and blueberries.

They also offer a “Super Skyscraper” variation of pancakes, which are stacks that are topped high with oats, strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. To top it all off, chocolate sauce and maple syrup are drizzled generously onto the stack.

Pro tip:

Don’t miss out on their savoury offerings as well! We especially recommend the brisket sandwich because of its juicy meat and jalapenos.

Antipodean @ Atria – Petaling Jaya

Antipodean @ Atria is a famous coffee house chain in Southeast Asia, but what drew us to their branch at Atria is their indoor kids’ playground. No matter which branch you choose, however, you can enjoy their small but solid pancake variations.

One thing we love about their pancakes is that they’re unbelievably thick and fluffy, which is great because it allows them to absorb whatever cream or syrup you choose. Our favourite is the banana pancake, which features a homemade butterscotch sauce and is topped with cream.

We also appreciate that they offer gluten-free pancakes, which are still impressively fluffy! If you’re looking to go the savoury route, however, you should check out their sweetcorn pancake with bacon—oh, it also comes with chilli butter!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for a different cake batter-based brunch/breakfast, you can also try Antipodean’s crepe and waffles!

Urban Daybreak – Penang

Urban Daybreak brings the brunch staples of Melbourne to Penang with their fantastic selection of open-faced sandwiches (tartines), pasta, and overnight oats. We especially love their tartines because they come with different toppings such as avocado, mushrooms, salmon, and eggs.

They only offer a single type of pancake, but its amazing fluffy texture and generous serving earn its spot on this list. These pancakes are completely vegan and come with a boatload of coconut yoghurt, blueberry compote, berries, and walnut crumbs.

We also recommend this spot for friend groups or couples who want to catch up somewhere peaceful and aesthetically pleasing as well. It takes the form of an old shophouse, and while it retains its traditional charm, it’s modernised with the comfiest furniture.

Pro tip:

If you’re going to this cafe as a date spot, check out Penang 3D Trick Art Museum beforehand to hit two birds with one stone! It’s one of the coolest museums in Penang, where you can take creative photos with optical illusions.

If you’re a coffee aficionado, then Macallum Connoisseurs should be on your radar! It’s one of those cafes that isn’t afraid to introduce new concoctions in search of new flavours—case in point, their bold and creamy coconut espresso.

The same creativity can be seen in their pancakes. For starters, they let you choose between a butter or banana batter, which can then be topped with different kinds of ingredients such as homemade syrup, fruits, nuts, etc.

They also offer a wide array of brunch staples that satisfy various types of cravings, from burgers to pasta, fries, chicken sandwiches, etc. One thing you shouldn’t miss out on while you’re here, however, is their creamy matcha!

Pro tip:

Stop by this place on weekdays from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM to enjoy their lunch/dinner deals. During these hours, you’ll get coffee on the house if you order any of the main course dishes.

If there’s ever an award for the most picture-perfect stack of pancakes in Penang, WHEELER’S is definitely winning it. They look like they were straight out of an episode of MasterChef with how perfectly distributed the powdered sugar is and how the fruits are laid on top of the stack!

They’re more than just a pretty face, too, as they’re perfectly executed, from the fluffiness of the pancakes to the freshness of the fruits and the sweetness of the syrup. This, paired with their mocha chips frappe, is a match made in heaven!

The place itself is a looker, featuring high ceilings, charming brick walls, detailed tiled floors, and wooden decor. It also consists of two floors, so expect tons of space—perfect for gatherings!

Pro tip:

While you’re here, be sure to check out the rest of the iconic Love Lane in Penang! It’s a charming street filled with shophouses-turned-cafes and striking murals.

Breda Cafe – Ipoh

Operating hours: Daily from 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM

Breda Cafe is a great hangout spot in Ipoh, and coincidentally, they offer some fantastic pancakes! Right off the bat, we fell in love when we saw how the blueberry jam was almost dripping to the side of the stack with how generous the serving was.

If you’re off sweets, however, you can try the pancake in itself as part of the cafe’s big breakfast meal. This filling dish pairs their signature fluffy pancake with scrambled eggs, bacon, and mushrooms.

We also recommend making your way to their chiller on the counter and checking which cakes are available during your visit! Personally, our favourite is the lemon lychee cake because of its perfect sweetness and acidity levels.

Pro tip:

Try visiting around 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM to enjoy their free drinks (non-refillable), alongside your pancakes!

Fifty Trees – Johor Bahru

Fifty Trees immediately stands out because of its garden-turned-café concept. The garden is wrapped around the interior of the cafe, which features massive windows, so you can expect serene green views while enjoying your coffee and meal.

Their pancakes also piqued our interest because of their fine-dining-esque presentation. Unlike other variations featured on this list, these pancakes are thinner, but they are still delectable thanks to the fruity homemade syrup.

It’s then topped with creatively sliced strawberries and blueberries and powdered with confectioners’ sugar. Pair this with one of their espresso-based drinks, and you’re golden!

Pro tip:

If you’d prefer to eat your pancakes for dessert, we recommend ordering their fried chicken sandwich as your main course!

Yellow Brick Road – Kuala Lumpur

Menu

Yellow Brick Road is easily one of KL’s best brunch spots because of its serene vibes, beautiful interior decor, and wide array of all-day breakfast staples. Among these staples are their pancakes, which come in various flavours.

You can either go for something more classic, like butter and maple syrup, or try something that proudly wears Malaysian cuisine up its sleeve, like the onde-onde pancake. It takes inspiration from the traditional Malay sweet by incorporating pandan, gula melaka, and coconut cream.

We also love dining here because of the wide selection of coffee and non-coffee drinks. The matcha latte is a personal favourite because it’s not too sweet, and the milk doesn’t overpower the matcha powder.

Pro tip:

If you’re planning on commuting, you can take the MRT and depart at the Semantan (SBK14) station. From there, the cafe is only a 2-minute walk away.
