8 Best Indian Restaurants in Kajang
Aside from China, another country that heavily influenced Malaysian cuisine is India as
evidenced by its spicy and fragrant dishes.
Fortunately, Malaysia still offers various restaurants around the country that offer authentic Indian dishes. This way, locals and tourists can enjoy the dishes that eventually inspired the country’s cuisine.
One spot in Malaysia, in particular, that houses the best Indian restaurants is Kajang. Check out some of the best establishments that you must try when visiting this humble town below!
How We Picked the Best Indian Restaurants in Kajang
We explored Kajang to find the best Indian restaurants and ended up with several establishments. We’ve chosen and rated these fine eateries using these criteria:
1. Basil Leaves
Criteria | Ratings |
Taste | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Customer service | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Value for money | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Ambience | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Menu variety | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
One restaurant that’s heavily recommended in Kajang is Basil Leaves and we’re glad we visited it during our search. Right off the bat, the establishment instantly impressed us with how clean its interior is which instantly made us comfortable dining in.
As far as their menu goes, we appreciated their inclusive menu as they also featured vegetarian and vegan options which were equally appetising. They also had a bunch of tasty-looking drinks such as masala tea and coffee.
We sat down in their wooden chairs and started with the fried chicken set meal. This set consisted of the titular fried chicken, roti and curry–some of the quintessential dishes from this cuisine.
The dish overall was aromatic and tasty but we were kind of disappointed with the rice as it was exceptionally dry compared to the other items in the set.
Nonetheless, it was a good meal that was heavy on the tummy at the same time because of their surprisingly big serving.
Another dish that we ordered was the fish biryani which wasn’t that bad but it also didn’t live up to the fried chicken set meal. The fish portion was smaller too which contrasted with our prior order.
However, we don’t know if this was a one-time thing or if this is really the portion of this specific dish.
One consistent thing about our experience, however, was the friendly and smile-filled staff. They were very accommodating and more than eager to assist us throughout our entire time in their restaurant.
Pros
- Reasonable prices
- Friendly staff
- Clean premises
Cons
- Portion of dishes can sometimes be inconsistent
- Rice was too dry for our taste

Good and tasty
“Love the food here. They have a variety of food. Vegetarians and non-vegetarians can eat here. Occasionally I go here for lunch. The food is good and tasty. Recommended. Go and have a try.
Vegetarian options: So many vegetarian menus here” —Wan Hasmuni, Google Reviews
Amazing food with top-notch cleanliness
“Attended an engagement function in their event hall on the 2nd floor. The food was amazing as usual as I am a regular customer. The staffs were very friendly and polite. Constantly cleaned the tables and refilled the food whenever it ran out. They didn’t have any problem managing the crowd.
I loved their mutton peratal, fried chicken and prawn sambal. Would definitely recommend family functions or gatherings here! Keep up the good work” —kabitha94, Tripadvisor
2. Restoran Al Khail
Criteria | Ratings |
Taste | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Customer service | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Value for money | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Ambience | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |

Our next stop was a humble eatery called Restoran Al Khail, which was situated in the Mutiara heights.
The place was divided into two sections with the first one being your typical open set-up and the second one being a more modern layout with air-conditioning.
Of course, we sat in the former section as it provided a more authentic dining experience. Plus, the place was clean overall so it didn’t really matter where we sat.
We found that ordering was the most difficult part—and for good reason. Their menu offered a wide variety of dishes from different cuisines such as India, the Middle East, Malaysia and more.
One of the dishes that caught our attention was the naan pizza. We loved how they used naan instead of pizza dough as it made the dish feel close to home.
We also tried their shawarma which was bursting with colours and flavours. We aren’t experts in Middle Eastern cuisine but we felt like this dish was authentic because of its tangy and spicy flavour.
It’s also refreshing to see how affordable their dishes were even though their servings were huge. Moreover, they were delicious as well and we have little to no complaints about them at all.
Where we do have a little bit of dispute, however, is with the service. During our time, we noticed how some of their staff don’t automatically take their customers’ orders.
Furthermore, it takes a long time before someone cleans up a table after a customer has finished eating. This is especially true once the place started getting packed during lunchtime.
Other than that, our experience was still pleasant given their affordable prices, delicious dishes and clean premises.
Pros
- Delicious and authentic dishes
- Clean premises
- Affordable prices
- Wide variety of dishes
Cons
- Service is subpar, especially during peak times

Good food
“The food is quite delicious and they have malay food too. There are also air-conditioned rooms to have a more comfortable meal —ejuemohdamin, Tripadvisor
Minum was excellent
“This place has been around a while but still looks like new and is very clean. Old style with tables on the road out front etc with the big screen TV. But has 2 airconditioned areas with glass panels and doors which gives it another star. Bright and colourful at night gives a good vibe to the place even before you see the extensive 4-page menu.
Minum was excellent, even the Ice blend Durian Belanda (Soursop) was close to perfect.
Butter Naan and fish curry were everything I missed in this type of food and hit my culinary spot dead centre. Appam also was perfect in thickness, texture and taste.
The only problem is I wish I lived closer so I could go there every day. It is not easy to find a place like this in KL let alone Kajang. But the winner is: RESTAURANT AL KHAIL, KAJANG”—Kerry D W, Google Reviews
3. Sre Seetharam Curry House
Criteria | Ratings |
Taste | ★★★☆☆ (3/5) |
Customer service | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Value for money | ★★★★★ (5/5) |
Ambience | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
Menu variety | ★★★★☆ (4/5) |
One restaurant that was on our must-visit list was Sre Seetharam Curry House as we kept hearing about it being one of the oldest Indian restaurants. Once we got here, we were immediately blown away by the aromatic dishes being prepared in the kitchen.
Ambience-wise, it’s your typical no-frills eatery. It doesn’t feature anything special in terms of design.
Furthermore, it can get a little congested because of its small space, especially during peak hours like lunchtime. Although this isn’t an issue with us, it’s not recommended if you’re looking to dine somewhere fancy.
However, what they lack in interior design is made up for by their delicious authentic dishes. There were several options on their menu but we eventually ended up ordering their mutton set meal.
This set was loaded and we were surprised to see it arrive on our table considering its low price point. It consisted of two cups of rice, some fresh vegetables, curd and lamb.
In old mutton fashion, the lamb was still attached to the bone and cooked until it reached the desired tenderness. It was easy to slice into chunks and was seasoned with just the right amount which perfectly contrasted with our rice.
Our experience was nothing out of the ordinary, probably because we came in at a dead time. We were seated immediately at our tables, got our food, paid and left.
Upon checking the reviews online, however, Sre Seetharam Curry House is a mixed bag.
Some customers praise it for their delicious dishes while others voice out their complaints regarding the restaurant, such as its poor customer service and overcharging issues.
Pros
- Authentic Indian dishes
- Affordable prices
- Variety of choices.
Cons
- Potential overcharging, especially towards foreigners
- Poor customer service according to several user reviews on Google Reviews

Best decision of my vacation
“This food is simply delicious. It must be underrated locally because it didn’t come up on my searches when I was standing a block away. I noticed how many people were eating and smiling as I walked by so I decided to give it a try.
Best decision of my vacation. The food is aromatic and bursting with flavour. The portions are generous and the prices are beyond reasonable.
Much of the cooking is done in the open air, with streets identified in front of you. No, this restaurant isn’t fancy or trendy but if you want some delicious homestyle Indian food that will have you dreaming about a return visit, then this is your place.” —David B., Yelp
Service is efficient and they have a free flow of papadams
“Me and the hubby always come here when we have a craving for Indian food. During lunch you can either choose from an array of dishes to go with your rice or you can opt to have banana leaf rice with a continuous flow of veges. I usually go for their dishes.
During lunch and dinner, they serve up to 30 types of vegetarian and 20 types of meat dishes. taking up to five or six vegetables may cost you about RM10. They also have upamma during breakfast time which is delicious. Service is efficient and they have a free flow of papadams.”—Michelle C., Yelp

If you’re looking for a classier dining experience while maintaining the authenticity of your favourite Indian food, we recommend Aina Banana Leaf Restaurant.
Since it’s quite well known as a busy place around noon, we decided to arrive earlier to avoid the rush.
Aina Banana Leaf Restaurant’s menu was a fusion of Malaysian and Indian cuisine so we had a lot to choose from. Eventually, we settled for the nasi lemak and boneless mutton with chapatis, which we feel like the best move we could have made.
We were also intrigued by their fresh coconut juice and thankfully we ordered it because it was so refreshing. Then, to top it all off, we ordered ice kacang with gula malaka for dessert–a pleasant cap to our meal!
As for the ambience, we loved the cosy atmosphere when we dined inside as it was comfortable thanks to the air conditioning.
Meanwhile, luscious greeneries surround the outside which is a treat for the eyes. Overall, the restaurant was spick and span which is an A+ in our books.
The main drawback we saw with our experience here was their pricey items which can throw off some customers, especially first-timers. Then again, we did experience a great dining experience that had good ambience, food and service.
Pros
- Air-conditioned interiors
- Clean premises
- Delicious Malaysian and Indian dishes
- Large portions
Cons
- Pricey menu

Best Banana Leaf Rice Platter
“We always like banana leaf restaurants in Malaysia and we have tried many, this place serves the best banana leaf rice combo, all the curries were yummy and the sauces were too good.
The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is like fine dining. Fresh Coconut was really fresh and the fresh juices were also very nice.
If you like banana leaf restaurants and Indian food then this is the restaurant for you.”—Adamkingwell, Tripadvisor
Kari kepala ikan with spicy rasam
“Our small family decided to try the banana leaf spread at this new restaurant in the neighbourhood last Sunday. We are no strangers to the Tanah Aina cafe next door to this restaurant. The fishhead curry and mutton varuval were very nice though I feel making them spicier will be just perfect. The sotong goreng tepung need more flesh than batter while the winner was the rasam. It has all the correct tastes combined in small sips from the aluminium cup. Awesome.” —Mastura M, Tripadvisor

Sometimes, the best way to indulge in Indian food is through an all-you-can-eat buffet. For this need, we recommend visiting the Latest Recipe in Putrajaya Hotel.
Upon entering, we were greeted with elegant interiors. Since we were so hungry, we were so pleased by the friendly staff who immediately walked us to our table.
Overall, the buffet offered enough choices from different cuisines, such as Indian and Chinese—but of course, we came here for the former. However, we did feel a bit disappointed that there wasn’t a salad bar for vegetarians.
Nonetheless, their selection of Indian food was impressive and we ended up filling our plates with some of our favourites such as curry chicken and grilled lamb.
These dishes were seasoned well and they used spices such as turmeric to make them taste more authentic.
The great thing about eating in this kind of restaurant is you get to indulge in a wide array of desserts and that we did. We had to stop by the chocolate fountain real quick to contrast and wash out some of the spicy and savoury flavours left in our mouths.
As for the vibe, we liked the overall feel of dining in Latest Recipe as it’s extremely classy. However, being inside a prestigious hotel is, in our opinion, a double-edged sword.
Yes, the world-class interior design and fancy dining experience are there but it also means that dining here would be pricey.
Pros
- Wide variety of Indian dishes
- Elegant atmosphere
- Friendly staff
Cons
- Expensive
- Lack of salad bar

Top Notch Service and Friendly Staff!
“We went for a buffet lunch at Latest Recipe for our father’s birthday. We are very happy with the overall experience – The food was nice and the staff here are really amazing.
Wanted to highlight particularly Siti Aminah and Shahrul Nizam for providing really great service, smiling all the time, and being very accommodating to our request for a birthday song for our father.
Thanks for making our celebration here memorable and definitely would recommend this place to our friends. We’re coming back again soon!” —HaziqN31, Tripadvisor
Good buffet lunch
“We went there for buffet lunch without making an early booking. We were told that the day buffet lunch was fully booked for many events. However, when we showed our disappointment, one of the male staff was willing to arrange a table for the four of us.
We felt so thankful and were very happy with the sitting arrangement. Good variety of local cuisines – Chinese, Indian and Malay. Japanese, Korean and western food were served too. Vegetarian guests could have their meals too.
Fresh seafood – prawns, scallops and prawns. Delicious desserts…Love the vibrant atmosphere and the excellent service. RM 118 per pax is certainly reasonable.”—sy3717, Tripadvisor

Another buffet we recommend is the Makan Kitchen at DoubleTree by Hilton Putrajaya Lakeside.
We arrived during dinnertime and opted for their Signature Buffet Dinner, which costs RM 148 per adult. It’s money well-spent, however, as the restaurant features a wide array of dishes from both Malaysian and Indian cuisine.
Our team’s favourite was the mee mamak maidin, hands-down. This dish was filled with flavours thanks to its incorporation of different kinds of seafood such as soft-shell crab and prawns.
Aside from seafood, this dish also consisted of aromatic kampung fried rice, sunny side up egg and sambal–a complete meal by itself!
We also commend their service for how eager the staff were to assist us with everything we needed. They were also all similes throughout our time at the restaurant, making them more approachable!
Ambience-wise, dining here made us feel like royalty thanks to its elegant interior design. This is, of course, thanks to its link to the 5-star hotel of DoubleTree by Hilton.
However, as we mentioned before, being connected to a luxurious hotel makes the restaurant elegant and expensive at the same time.
Nevertheless, we found the prices here reasonable even with its connection to the Hilton but it does pose a problem for other customers.
Pros
- Variety of Indian and Malaysian dishes
- Luxurious interior design
- Speedy customer service
Cons
- Pricey

Khan’s Indian Cuisine isn’t only a famous restaurant but a hangout place as well. It’s widely known to be packed quickly, making parking brutal, so we waited outside before its opening hours.
Their menu is extensive and it contains just about every essential dish in Indian cuisine. This made it difficult for us to choose but we decided to go for lamb sheekh kebab and spicy Bombay biryani.
Both dishes didn’t disappoint as they were spiced just right and cooked to perfection. We especially wanted to highlight the lamb meat as it was grilled to achieve an amazing char that contributed a smoky flavour to the overall dish.
The ambience was great too as it felt like we were dining in a Michelin-star restaurant. It features a more modern decor which is completely different to the usual Indian eateries here in the country.
They also have outside seating for those that want to bask in the fresh air. But if you’re like us, you can dine inside and enjoy the air conditioning.
We also noticed that aside from the restaurant itself, they also have a cafe on their premises so we decided to visit.
Although their wide selection of coffee drinks was tempting, we ended up trying their mango lassi which was this combination of blended mangoes and yoghurt.
Pros
- Big servings
- Myriad of authentic Indian dishes
Cons
- Parking spots can be difficult to find sometimes
- Gets filled with customers quickly

Loved it, and would definitely visit again if I had the chance
“The best Indian food I had in Malaysia, I’m not a fan of Chinese food, so Indian food was my first option for the whole 2 weeks I spent in Malaysia.
This restaurant is the best, loved it. Classy, delicious food, great food portion, lovely staff, and a very nice atmosphere.
And although it is a classy restaurant, the prices are very reasonable.”—J_mohamed144, Tripadvisor
Delicious food
“Food tastes delicious but a bit spicy for people who aren’t used to spiciness. Meal portions are all big except the kebab set that I ordered, the meat was too little to be full with it. Service was nice and waiters seem eager to serve you. Price was reasonable.” —Kok Fang Zhuo, Google Reviews

A great Indian spot that offers affordable and delicious dishes is TG’s Nasi Kandar. This restaurant features several local favourites from Indian cuisine and we got to try them out first-hand!
One of the dishes we ordered was their lamb curry. What we loved about this dish was that the sauce wasn’t too spicy and overpowering and instead provided a perfect flavour for the tender lamb meat.
Of course, our dish was served alongside naan which is a staple dish in India. Their naan was cooked perfectly as it developed a crispy shell while maintaining a fluffy inner texture.
Aside from that, we also tried out their roti canai which was served alongside dhal curry which was a match made in heaven. The roti was easy to break apart thanks to its flaky texture making it perfect for dipping in the warm dhal curry.
As for the place itself, the best word to describe it is charming. We loved its simple no-frills aesthetic which makes it look like a typical eatery with its metallic dining sets and ceiling fans.
It also features an open layout allowing good airflow within the premises which makes up for the lack of air conditioning.
Pros
- Affordable prices
- Delicious and authentic Indian dishes
- Breakfast, lunch and dinner options
Cons
- Lack of air conditioning
- Average service
