Need your caffeine fix while you’re in KL but tired of the usual spots? Luckily for you, tons of cafes are scattered across KL, albeit a bit hidden—but that’s part of the fun!

For instance, one of the best places to go cafe hunting in KL is Cheras, a local suburb beloved for its bustling food scene. It features countless cosy nooks and trendy hotspots that offer amazing coffee, brunch and a nice spot where you can chill with your friends—or by yourself!

The real challenge here is separating which of these are worth checking out from those that you’re better off ignoring—that’s where I come in! As a coffee lover myself, I’ve been to a handful of these cafes so I can share with you the best ones Cheras has to offer.

The Mechanic Cafe is a hip spot in the suburb that offers creative concoctions—and they’re all great! Aside from the usual espresso-based coffee, you can also grab one of their signature drinks like the “Sunburn”, which is a mixture of espresso, sparkling water and lemon juice.

They also serve unique lattes where they incorporate interesting ingredients such as rose syrups and honeycombs. Meanwhile, you can order their amazing non-coffee drinks like matcha lattes, milk chocolate and rose milk if you’re not into caffeine.

Lastly, The Mechanic Cafe also offers a solid selection of food ranging from savoury meals to sweet delights. For instance, you can start your meal with a messy plate of truffle mushroom pasta and end it with a nice sweet chocolate cookie croissant—the possibilities are endless!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking to order something for sharing, ordering their truffle butter with sourdough is one of the best decisions you can make! Their truffle butter is to die for and the bread is perfectly crunchy and airy at the same time.

Project Happiness instantly put a smile on our faces during our first visit, as we were greeted by the aroma of their freshly baked pastries as soon as we entered their doors. Among these delights, the biggest highlight for us is their croissants, as they are super flakey and fluffy.

Furthermore, their croissants are packed to the brim with different types of fillings, ranging from savoury to sweet. One of the best examples of this is their salted egg croissant served with a side of vanilla ice cream—trust us, this works!

If that’s not in your lane, you can also try their wide selection of waffles like their buttermilk fried chicken, which is a hearty and savoury meal that will leave you feeling full. Meanwhile, you can order their Summer Berries Waffle if you’re looking for something fruitier and sweeter.

Don’t worry though because on paper, this is still a cafe so you can still expect to get your caffeine fix here through their latte and black coffee. The real highlight here, however, is their selection of refreshers, featuring watermelon iced tea, summer matcha and more.

Pro tip:

If you’re not too hungry for grilled slices of meat, we recommend ordering their poke bowl salmon and tuna. It’s not too light but it’s not too filling either—plus, it’s one of the healthier options on their menu!

As someone who loves Western food, I feel lucky to live somewhere near places like Bookmark Coffee! This cafe serves all the staples of this cuisine, from chicken chops to carbonara, fish and chips as well as local delicacies like smoked duck, which by the way, is super delicate!

The best thing about this cafe is that for every cafe latte you order, you’ll get a complimentary coffee art—pretty cool! These artworks aren’t your typical flower or swan imagery too but instead are full portraits of people as well as charming cartoons.

You wouldn’t order these lattes for their art alone, as they come in spectacular flavours as well such as butterscotch and salted caramel. One latte we were surprised to see was their apple cafe latte, which we would’ve never thought was a great coffee flavour.

Pro tip:

Consider coming here if you’re a vegetarian! They offer an extensive meatless menu that boasts dishes such as meatless sambal pasta and fried mushroom egg rice.

They have a limited selection but they hit all the right spots! For instance, if you’re looking for something savoury, you can order their BBQ pulled pork sandwich but if you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, you can get their pain au chocolat.

You can also expect to get a premium-quality cup of joe while you’re here! If you want our advice, we recommend their cafe latte, as it’s super rich and creamy without losing the kick of the coffee bean.

These cats are all adorable and you can play with them after you enjoy sipping your cup of coffee! Speaking of, their coffee here is ridiculously good, whether it be their classic mochas and cappuccinos or their innovative coconut latte and nanas cold brew.

Lastly, their croffles are a close second to their cats when it comes to reasons to visit this place. These croissant-waffle hybrids are super flavourful and can either come in savoury flavours like jalapeno turkey ham or sweet variations such as Biscoff and mixed berries.

This bread is also served in their big breakfast meal where it’s decorated with eggs (your choice of cooking, of course), house-baked beans, sausages and ham. Alternatively, you can also order their croissants, which can also be used to sandwich ingredients like ham, cheese, etc.

These brunch meals are best paired with their beverages like their iced white coffee. If you’re feeling fancy, however, you can freely order a coconut affogato and treat yourself to a nice sweet ice cream on top of your espresso.
