A Beginner’s Guide to Aircon Care

A Beginner’s Guide to Aircon Care

An aircon not only cools the air around us but cleans it too all thanks to the filter. That is why they’re a valuable appliance to have in residential and commercial spaces because it keeps us comfortable.

And because they’re valuable (and expensive to boot!), they need proper maintenance at least twice a year or more, depending on your usage.

Aside from getting professional help, you can do your own part in ensuring the health and longevity of your aircon. For this, we made a beginner’s guide to aircon care to get you started.

1) Clean Your Aircon Filters

Whether you own a split-type, cassette, or portable AC model, cleaning its filter should be done routinely to remove dust, dirt, and allergens.

You can actually do it yourself by rinsing the filter with water. If it’s very dirty, you can mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water, let it soak the filter for an hour, rinse with water, and then let it dry, before putting it back to your AC.

Otherwise, you can have an aircon technician clean the whole unit—including its filter—for you. But, the important thing here is to keep to a schedule throughout the year so that you won’t forget to maintain it.

2) Clean the Condenser Coils to Prevent Mould Growth

The condenser coils are a major component in every AC unit. Simply put, they are responsible for changing warm air from outside into cool air which enters the room.

They have to be cleaned thoroughly in order to stay efficient. Well-maintained condenser coils will help keep your room cool and relaxing without causing the unit to work harder.

Also, these are found on the outside unit of the air conditioner. To clean them, you can use a soft-bristled brush but be careful not to bend or damage the coils.

A vinegar and water solution can also be used to deep-clean them as well.

3) Check the AC Unit Occasionally

Air-conditioning units are sensitive appliances. Due to long and hard use, it can exhibit an issue or two which shouldn’t be ignored.

Check the fan motor, wiring, thermostat, remote, or other parts if they are working up to par.

So replace the fans if they are cracked, call an electrician to fix any wiring issue, adjust the temperature, and oil the fan motor bearings to reduce friction with other moving parts and extend their life.

Doing these things can improve your overall experience with your aircon system. But for safety reasons, we recommend calling a professional technician if you’re dealing with a complex issue.

4) Call an Aircon Specialist

With many years of experience, aircon specialists are adept at identifying and fixing your aircon’s issue. It won’t take long for them to safely get your old unit up and running again at home.

A lot of AC problems can be fixed with cleaning or repair services. So, don’t immediately give up on your faulty air conditioner without first letting have them check it.

True, calling a pro may give you an additional expense, but on the flip side, it could keep you from splurging on a new one given your unit still has some life left.

5) Replace Your Aircon When It’s Getting Old

Aircons differ in their brand, quality, and durability. Most aircon lasts for about five years on average or even up to 10 to 12 years if maintained properly.

Failing to power on, not cooling well, and overheating are a few examples of common issues that an aircon may have.

If, even after fixing them, they come back to haunt you, it’s probably time to replace your existing AC. After all, no one wants to deal with higher utility expenses just because of a single appliance.
