With a decade of experience under its belt, Kenny Hills Bakers has spawned several branches across the city. It’s not hard to see why it has reached these heights though, as they’re home to amazing pastries, cakes and even coffee!

Whether you’re craving simple fresh loaves of bread, sweet apple tarts, strawberry doughnuts or anything in between, you can find something that will satisfy your sweet tooth here! Moreover, they also feature savoury offerings like their waffle and fried chicken combo.

The place itself is worth highlighting as well, as it’s among the most beautiful bakeries we’ve seen in KL. It features a warm and cosy ambience that’s perfectly encapsulated by its rustic interior design—easily one of the most Instagrammable cafes in Kuala Lumpur!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for something heavier to start your morning right, we recommend ordering some of their big breakfast plates! Furthermore, you can order one of their pastry sets and take some of the items to-go if you can’t finish them all.

TK Bakery is one of the oldest bakeries in Kuala Lumpur, boasting simple stores and an expansive selection of pastries. They’ve been around for more than 5 decades, which is why it’s been a staple among locals for several generations now.

This is also why you’ll still see traditional pastries being served here such as kaya butter puffs, egg tarts, mini buns, butter rolls and more. We want to highlight the egg tarts though, as it’s the creamiest version we’ve tried of this pastry, which is why it’s almost always sold out!

The best part about all of this is that you won’t have to burn a hole in your pocket just to indulge in these delightful goodies! This is because the place isn’t your fancy schmancy patisserie and cafe but instead your traditional bakery through and through.

Pro tip:

Be sure to get there before 5:00 PM or as early as possible to get a chance to buy their limited egg tarts! They sold 10,000 of these every day so be one of the lucky patrons to get them by being an early bird.

When it comes to offering the most beautiful spaces for brunch and breakfast, Levain Boulangerie & Patisserie is definitely among the best. The store is a bungalow with huge windows, allowing for natural sunlight to enter the premises.

It’s more than just an Instagrammable breakfast spot though, as its pastries are just as spectacular as its looks! Everything from their cinnamon rolls to their croissants, buns and more are displayed behind their counter, making everyone drool at just the mere sight of them.

You can’t go wrong with anything from their menu, but if you want our advice, we recommend the chocolate log bread. It’s perfectly flaky, sweet and best of all, it pairs perfectly with their delicious coffee and non-coffee drinks.

Pro tip:

If you’re visiting with friends and you want to bond over some brunch, we recommend ordering their pasta, burgers and sandwiches!

Der Backmeister is one of the most unique bakeries in the city hugely because of its wide selection of German and European pastries. Personally, this is a welcome breath of fresh air in a city filled with traditional bakeries that offer somewhat the same selection of baked goodies.

If you’re overwhelmed by the unfamiliar pastries or you simply don’t know what to get, we highly recommend ordering their apple strudel! This amazing German pastry is oozing with sugary apple bits that are sure to satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something more savoury, you can try their authentic currywurst sausage, which is a true German staple. The curry spread they have here isn’t like the ones here in Malaysia, but it’s still worth checking out!

Pro tip:

You can also stock up on your cold cuts while you’re here! They offer a variety of delicious German sausages that are perfect to pair with mustard, curry and bread.

Universal Bakehouse is the epitome of a neighbourhood bakery. Each day, this place bakes various types of loaves of bread and pastries, ranging from sweet to savoury and the best part is that they won’t cost you a fortune!

Upon entering its doors, the whiff of freshly baked bread will make it hard for you to leave empty-handed. It also helps that they serve just about every pastry you could think of from sweet tarts to sweet buns and everything in between.

What’s more impressive is that even their leftover dough is repurposed into making an amazing pastry they call “twist sticks”. These light, airy and flakey bread sticks are flavoured generously with sesame seeds and cheddar—yum!

Pro tip:

This bakery has limited seating so we advise ordering your bread to go instead. Better yet, we recommend buying a bunch of their pastries and bringing them to one of KL’s amazing parks and arranging the loveliest picnic ever!

Everything on their menu is worth trying, but we highly recommend ordering at least one of their freshly baked sourdough loaves. Just lather these bad boys up with some butter and jam, and you’re golden!

They also serve some amazing burgers if you’re one to indulge in a meaty patty in the morning! This, along with their other brunch items like pasta and salad will make you fall in love with this place even more.

Pro tip:

Arrive at least an hour earlier than its opening time if you want to get first dibs on this bakery’s amazing pastries in the morning. This is because at around 7:30 AM, you’ll already see a queue building up.

When it comes to delivering the best croissants in the city, Croisserie may just take the crown, and a lot of locals will agree with me on this. For starters, their version of this classic pastry is notably fluffier, which makes them all the more satisfying to eat.

It also helps that these croissants feature different flavours that further elevate the pastry. One of these is the “croissant aux amandes”, which is topped with almond flakes and cream.

They also serve one that’s topped with sweet blueberries and cream, which is a surefire hit among kids. However, we’re pleased to say that this bakery isn’t a one-trick pony too, as it also offers other pastries such as pain au chocolat, tarts and baguettes!

Pro tip:

If you want to avoid long queues and just want to satisfy your sweet tooth cravings, you can effortlessly place your orders via their official website!

Delifrance

Menu

Delifrance is a great bakery that does an amazing job of making you feel like you’re in Paris while treating you to the flavours of Malaysia at the same time. It’s a chich cafe that excels in both visual and taste so if you’re one to document your amazing finds, this is the place for you!

One of its biggest draws is its airy and flakey croissants, which are all perfect to eat with a small knob of butter. They even offer croissant sandwiches, which see the classic pastries as buns for ham, cheese, lettuce and tomato.

They also offer an assortment of sweet pastries, ranging from blueberry danishes to honey croissants, brownies and strawberry puffs. If you’re looking for something savoury, you can also check out their rice meals like nasi lemak!

Pro tip:

If you want to get a little taste of local cuisine, we recommend ordering their puding cendol. This takes one of Malaysia’s most iconic traditional sweets and turns it into a fancy dessert you’d typically find in buffets.

Jaslyn Cakes

Jaslyn Cakes takes the cake (pun PURELY intended), for treating anyone’s sweet tooth thanks to its selection of sugary baked goodies. This bakery will lure you to its counter once you see its enticing slices of different cakes behind glass displays but thankfully, you won’t regret it!

Among these cakes, one that immediately stands out is their cheesecake, which is notably different with its incorporation of ginger. It’s a weird thing to think about at first, but the strong flavour of ginger is immediately tamed by the creaminess and richness of the cheesecake.

Aside from that, you can also treat yourself to some sponge cakes, all of which feature thick and creamy icing that separates each plush layer. If you’re looking for something simpler, however, we highly recommend getting their sourdough croissant.

Pro tip:

You can also check out their stores at Mont Kiara and Desa ParkCity if their branch in Bangsar is too far from your planned itinerary for that day.

Visiting Tommy Le Baker is an experience in itself, as it’s one of the most fascinating bakeries in Kuala Lumpur. For starters, the bakery is located in the middle of an art gallery, so you’ll have the benefit of admiring art pieces before, during and after your pastry fix!

Furthermore, you can catch a glimpse of how the bakers knead and bake their fresh goodies on-site! Speaking of goodies, the ones found here are simple yet fantastic, ranging from simple sourdough loaves to chocolate chip cookies, banana bread and more.

If you’re looking for something heavier, however, we highly recommend ordering their amazing ribeye steak. You can also grab a nice filling sandwich if you prefer something that’s more appropriate for breakfast/brunch.

Pro tip:

One of the fastest and most affordable ways to get to Tommy Le Baker is by riding the train and dropping off at the Maharajalela tram stop.

It couldn’t get simpler than The Bread Shop. This aptly named bakery is your one-stop shop for everything pastry, from buns to croissants, rolls and anything you could think of that’s freshly baked.

However, you can’t leave this place without trying their famous cruffins, which they actually introduced here in Kuala Lumpur over a decade ago. If you don’t know this innovative pastry, it’s a crossbreed between muffins and croissants—pretty cool!

These hybrid pastries are then filled with different types of fillings ranging from cream to fresh fruit, jams and more! Personally, the salted caramel cruffin holds a special place in my heart because of its amazing combination of flavours—plus, it was my introduction to this pastry!

Pro tip:

You can also visit its neighbouring restaurants, Siti Li Dining and Decanter, before treating yourself to something sweet in this bakery. These restaurants serve amazing Malaysian and Western food, respectively.

Bunn Choon Restaurant

Alright, Bun Choon isn’t actually a bakery per se but we had to include it on this list because of its amazing tarts. Although they’re known as one of the best dim sum restaurants in the city, they also offer the most amazing egg tarts.

It’s not hard to see why this tart is beloved today, as it’s been perfected for more than a hundred years since the restaurant was established back in 1893. They offer more than just these tarts though, as their menu also features cakes, sticks and puffs.

The store itself is worth highlighting, as it does a great job of taking you back in time. It’s one of those traditional shophouses that’s been modernised while retaining its old charm—pretty cool!

Pro tip:

While you’re here, be sure to check out Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Ancestral Hall, which is located minutes away from the restaurant.

If you’re looking for a quick bite to start your day, then Orito should be on your radar! It’s a cool and cosy little cafe that serves an impressive assortment of pastries inspired by those found in Paris!

In fact, one of their bestsellers is being hailed by locals as the best Paris brest they’ve tasted in the country! We can’t blame them too, as this amazing pastry is filled to the brim with a delightful hazelnut paste.

They also serve various doughnuts, which are the perfect accompaniment for one of their cups of coffee. You can either go for the classic custard flavour or go all-in with the sweetness by ordering the Nutella D flavour.

Pro tip:

You can also check out their matcha choux if you’re not looking for something overly sweet!

Paris Baguette

When your itinerary takes you to The Pavilion (which you definitely should check out), stopping by Paris Baguette will be one of the best decisions you can make. This place will make you feel like a kid in a candy store with its mouth-watering pastries, ranging from sweet to savoury.

Speaking of savoury, one product of theirs that we recommend the most is the “crozza”, which is a mix between a croissant and a pizza. You can either get them in their triple cheese and ham or four mushroom cheese flavours, but either one is great!

Furthermore, you can also treat yourself to a handful of pasties like mini croissants, sausage rolls, toasts, twist doughnuts and more. You can’t go wrong with any of them but you can’t leave without trying one of their amazing cakes!

Pro tip:

If you want to save money on transportation, you can ride the GO KL bus for free and drop off at the Purple Line Stop. From there, you only have to cross the street to reach The Pavilion, which is where you’ll find Paris Baguette.
