One thing they won’t tell you about Johor Bahru travel guides is how much of a foodie haven it is. From dim sum to seafood and everything in between, the variety of dishes in the city is impressive!
However, there comes a time when you want to just tap into your inner carnivore and enjoy a slab of perfectly cooked steak. Fortunately, JB doesn’t fall short of steakhouses, and we must admit, we’ve been to these spots more than we can count on one hand!
So, allow us to bask in our favourite Western dish and continue reading to discover some of Johor Bahru’s best steakhouses here!

Contact details: +60 7-244 6767
Operating hours:
- Saturday to Thursday: 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM
- Friday: 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM, 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM
Cost: $$$
Me’nate Steak Hub JB is one of the most well-known steakhouses in the country, featuring multiple locations in the city and Kuala Lumpur. It offers a more personalised dining experience, as diners can choose which cut they want to try for themselves from the glass display.
The meat selection here is second to none, offering different cuts of beef and lamb, some of which are dry-aged! However, the biggest draw here is the signature Wagyu series, which features spectacular marbling that contributes to the tenderness and overall flavour of the meat.
The cherry on top is the different sauces they offer: black pepper, mushroom and garlic. These go well with all of their meat and contribute another layer of flavour to the overall smoky and savoury taste.
Pro tip:
You can also diversify your table by ordering some of their seafood specialties! They offer salmon, fish and chips, etc., but we highly recommend their lobster for classic surf and turf action.
George & Dragon Cafe
– Media credit: georgeanddragoncafe
Address: No. 1 & 3, Jalan Glasiar
Contact details: +60 7-232 3761
Operating hours: Daily from 12:00 PM to 10:30 PM
Cost: $$$
While George & Dragon may not look like your typical steakhouse, it does offer a mean selection of steaks on its brunch menu, and that’s enough reason for us to include it here! For starters, they offer sirloin and ribeye, both of which are made with premium Aussie beef.
On paper, they may seem like your run-of-the-mill steaks, but their special house sauce makes them extra special. It’s a flavourful marinade that makes the steak more umami to the point where you don’t need to add their mushroom gravy.
If you’re looking for something gamier, you can also order their lamb! We recommend the grilled lamb shoulder the most because of its perfect tenderness and the addition of rosemary sauce, which helps soften the gaminess of the meat.
Pro tip:
If you’re coming with a date, we recommend ordering one of their pasta to share on top of your individual steaks. More specifically, we advise you to get the spicy salmon pasta to add a hint of seafood to your order.
Fire Pitz

Address: 2A, PTD 195458, Jalan Horizon Perdana 6
Contact details: +60 18-988 3188
Operating hours:
Cost: $$$
Fire Pitz offers a unique open-flame dining experience, where you’ll get to see your favourite cuts of meat prepared and grilled in front of you! The saying “a feast for the eyes” is given new meaning with the finesse of the expert chefs.
Gimmicks aside, however, this is still a solid steakhouse for those looking for premium cuts of meat. For instance, they offer both Australian Angus and Japanese Wagyu beef, which are seen as the Lamborghini and Ferrari of the steak world (we’ll leave you to decide which is which).
However, if you can only choose one from their menu, we’d recommend the tomahawk 9 times out of 10. We love it because they leave the bone in, and it’s a huge slab of meat with minimal amounts of fat!
Pro tip:
While waiting for your steaks, we recommend getting the Japanese oysters as your appetiser! They’re grilled to perfection and served alongside Swiss cheese for the ultimate flavour bomb.
Grill Bar Steakhouse

Address: 202, Jalan Sri Pelangi
Contact details: +60 19-337 3400
Operating hours: Wednesday to Monday: 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM
Cost: $$$
Grill Bar Steakhouse is great for those looking to sneak a bit of nightlife into their dinner because it offers high-quality steaks and cocktails. For this list, however, we’ll be focusing on the former, and we must say, this place offers some of the best-grilled steaks in the city!
Each piece of meat features criss-crossed grill marks while the interior remains tender. Of course, you can have your steak cooked to the doneness you desire, but if you want to flush out the flavours, we recommend getting their medium-rare black Angus.
Our favourite thing about dining here is that they don’t skimp out on the sides, whether greens, potatoes, or anything in between. Furthermore, their homemade sauce never fails to add that peppery and savoury flavour to the meat.
Pro tip:
Wash away the savoury flavours from your meal by ordering their homemade lava cake! It’s not super sweet, and the filling isn’t bitter either, making it a great cherry on top of your hearty meal.
Awagyu Restaurant
– Media credit: awagyuyakiniku.jb
Address: 25c, Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir
Contact details: +60 11-5776 4363
Operating hours:
- Monday to Thursday: 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM
- Friday to Sunday: 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM
Cost: $$$
Awagyu Restaurant isn’t what you’d call a traditional steakhouse, as it’s more of a yakiniku spot. However, its A5 Wagyu beef was just too good for us not to include this restaurant on this list—plus, it offers far more variety than some steakhouses out there!
What’s excellent about a yakiniku restaurant like this is that you’ll get to grill your meat to your liking. Furthermore, the slices of beef they offer here are extremely thin to the point where they don’t have to be grilled for a long time to achieve the perfect texture.
They offer different sets that vary in inclusions, but we recommend the premium yakiniku combo sets the most because of the different cuts of their different types of meat. It features parts like ribloin and sirloin and sides like gyoza, California maki, and salad.
Pro tip:
If you’re dining alone and want to save money, we recommend opting for the lunch sets, which include meat of your choice, rice, salad, eggs, and a scoop of their delectable ice cream!
Wadihana Islamic Steakhouse

Address: 36-02, JLN ALIFF 3
Contact details: +60 13-733 3280
Operating hours: Daily from 3:00 PM to 11:30 PM
Cost: $$
Wadihana Islamic Steakhouse is one of the best halal-certified spots in the city. They offer a wide variety of steak types, from chuck to brisket, tenderloin, sirloin, and more—plus, they also feature certified premium wagyu!
All of their meat can be grilled to your liking and served alongside a hearty portion of salad and potato wedges. Their ribeye is a step above the rest, as it comes with minimal fat and the juiciest interior.
Aside from the part of the cow, you can also choose your gravy, as they offer different types, such as mushroom, garlic, and black pepper. If you’d ask us, we’d choose their orange lemon butter all day long because their steaks are flavourful enough!
Pro tip:
You can also opt for their delicious lamb if you’re not planning on eating beef. They’re prepared just as fancy and are served with a heaping scoop of mashed potatoes as well as fresh vegetables.
Bob’s Grill & Bar
– Media credit: bobsgrillandbar and wawanfoodie
Address: Lot 42-01 Ground Floor
Contact details: +60 12-733 5003
Operating hours: Daily from 12:00 PM to 10:30 PM
Cost: $$$
Bob’s Grill & Bar is more than just a steakhouse, as it offers a wide array of Western favourites that will put Hard Rock Cafe to shame. For instance, aside from their steaks, they also offer big, juicy burgers that can either feature an Angus beef patty or a grilled chicken.
However, the main stars are still the selection of steaks. This selection features tenderloin, striploin, and ribeye and is made from either black Angus or Japanese Wagyu.
They also offer slow-cooked beef ribs that fall off the bone with the slightest tug. They’re bathed in their savoury, tangy barbeque sauce and served alongside a heaping scoop of mashed potatoes and coleslaw.
Pro tip:
Don’t miss out on their garlic bread if you’re looking for a starter that will get your appetite going. These bad boys come with freshly chopped garlic and are topped off with parmesan cheese.
Matterhorn Bistro
– Media credit: shishu.hara and vi.hara
Address: No. 3, Jalan Rosmerah 4/14
Contact details: +60 7-352 2288
Operating hours:
- Monday to Saturday: 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM, 5:30 PM to 12:00 AM
- Sunday: 5:00 PM to 12:00 AM
Cost: $$$
Matterhorn Bistro is another Western restaurant in Johor Bahru that offers a classy dining experience and the finest selection of steaks. They offer Japanese Wagyu and Australian Angus steaks, the former of which features beautiful marbling, which means softer fat!
However, don’t overlook the Australian Angus steaks, as they’re just as meaty and savoury, especially the ribeye. The cows they source for their steaks are all grain-fed, while the Japanese Wagyu cattle are all grass-fed.
As if their steaks aren’t flavourful enough, they also offer a wide array of sauces that add different types of flavours to the meat. For instance, the garlic butter and red wine sauces add richness, while the onion gravy hints at sweet and savoury flavours.
Pro tip:
If you plan on ordering their Australian Angus steak, we recommend pairing it with one of the restaurant’s full-bodied red wines. Usually, you’d want to look for brands like Cabernet Sauvignon, but when you’re in doubt, don’t be afraid to ask!
The Marco Polo Kitchen
– Media credit: visitjohor
Address: 35, Jalan Indah 15/2
Contact details: +60 12-788 4046
Operating hours:
- Saturday to Thursday: 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM
- Friday: 11:30 AM to 10:30 PM
Cost: $$
If you’re craving Italian food with some steaks on the side, then the Marco Polo Kitchen should be right up your alley! They offer a wide array of pasta, salad, pizza, and four types of steaks: black Angus ribeye, Angus sirloin, grass-fed tenderloin, and steak Diane.
Black Angus ribeye is the holy grail, in our opinion, because it has perfect tenderness and juiciness due to its fat content. It also comes with free soup, green salad, roasted potatoes, and grilled tomatoes for the perfect hearty meal.
If you’re overwhelmed by the high-fat content of ribeye (understandably so), you can’t go wrong with their grass-fed tenderloin. They offer the same tenderness and a slightly less savoury flavour, but you’ll get something healthier!
Pro tip:
If you’re planning on dining here often, you can sign up to join the Dining Cultures Group (DCG) and get up to 50% off on their regular items.
