Checking Out 14 of Subang Jaya’s Best Spots to Go Food Hopping

Subang Jaya is an underrated foodie spot that locals have been praising for as long as I can remember. It’s up there with places like Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya as one of the best places to go food hopping just because of its bustling food scene.

With tons of cafes, mookata spots, affordable restaurants and more, it’s hard to navigate the city’s bustling food scene—that’s where I come in! Check out these amazing Subang foodie spots to find the best desserts, local and international food, and more:

Jibril is one of the best cafes in Subang Jaya, as it puts local dishes at the forefront instead of your usual Western items (though you’re still welcome to try them here). One of the best examples of this is their nasi lemak, which features their signature butter chicken—yum!

The main star of the show here, however, is their pisang goreng XL, which stays true to its name! Here, this traditional Malaysian sweet has been overhauled by featuring massive deep-fried banana fritters as well as a heaping scoop of vanilla ice cream on its side.

Pro tip:

We recommend ordering their chilli con carne nachos for your appetizer! They’re light, delicious and best of all, good for sharing!

Three Plates Full live by its name because we always end up full after eating three (or more) of their dishes. We can’t help it though, as their menu features some lip-smacking dishes like their BBQ pork ribs, which are marinated with their amazing homemade sauce!

We also make it a point to order one of their salads when eating here to compensate for the amount of meat we know we’re going to eat. Fortunately, these leafy green salads are just as great, featuring cured salmon, chopped bacon and grilled chicken!

Three Plates Full is also a cool hang-out spot with friends, as they also offer a wide array of coffee drinks like mocha, lattes and cold brew. They even serve non-coffee drinks like matcha latte and hot chocolate—what more could you ask for?

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for something to end your meal on a sweet note but don’t want the usual dessert, we recommend ordering their wonton cheesecake, which is exactly what it sounds like!

Sumi-Ka should be on your radar if you’re craving grilled meat and I mean tons of them! It’s among the best yakitori spots in the city, boasting enticing skewered meat that’s waiting to be grilled to perfection!

Their meat selection ranges anywhere from pork belly to chicken breast and thigh as well as unorthodox choices like beef tongue! Furthermore, these come with sides like sweet potatoes and lettuce that will help balance the lingering meaty flavour in your mouth.

Pro tip:

If you want the ultimate yakitori experience, we recommend ordering one of their spirits! You can either order their umeshu or sake, both of which are perfect for pairing with your selection of meat.

From one grilling joint to another, Asumo is one of the most premium Japanese barbeque spots you can visit in the city! Featuring Japanese wagyu beef, this place will satisfy your cravings for melt-in-your-mouth meaty goodness in no time.

One of the things we love about this place is that they opt to use charcoal grills instead of gas stoves. It may not seem like a huge difference at first, but the charring that you’ll get and the eventual texture that you’ll end up with is much better using a charcoal grill.

To balance out the meatiness of the beef cuts, they also offer a wide array of sides like kimchi and salads. Furthermore, you can also get their deep-fried potato balls and Japanese rolled omelette if you’re not into leafy greens.

Pro tip:

If it’s your first time coming here, we highly recommend visiting on weekdays, as this is when they offer their special trial course. Here, they’ll offer something like a trial where their meat is sold at discounted prices—plus, they’ll come with sides and desserts!

RATA is hands-down the best place to get Asian fusion food in Subang Jaya, boasting dishes from Malaysia, Korea, Japan, etc. One of the best dishes that encapsulates their style is the mutton masala pizza, which puts the Indian classic at the forefront of comfort food.

If you’re looking for something to share that’s a bit more familiar to your tastebuds, we highly recommend their chicken wings. They can either come in smokey BBQ flavour or sriracha and mango chutney if you want some Indian fusion into the mix.

Of course, you can’t leave the place without trying their nasi lemak, which we especially love because of their spicy sambal. Plus, it comes with sweet and tender shrimp instead of the usual fried chicken, which we thought was better!

Pro tip:

One of the cheapest and easiest ways to get here is by riding the bus and dropping off at the SJ55 Subang Jaya Medical Centre bus stop. This will drop you off directly in front of the restaurant!

You can’t go wrong with anything from their selection, but if you ask us, you have to try their classic beef Wellington. From the doneness of the fillet mignon to the flakiness of the crust and the perfect sauce, everything about this dish is nailed down to a tee!

Another highlight of their offerings is their seafood tower, which is basically a messy platter of seafood delicacies such as fresh oysters, prawns, crab legs and more. Plus, with some melted butter and lemon slices on the side, you’re golden!

Uncle Soon Fried Rice is one of the most iconic restaurants in Subang Jaya and among the most affordable ones in the KL area! It’s so iconic that your trip to the city wouldn’t be complete without trying a plate of their delicious fried rice.

It may seem like an everyday meal at first, but there’s something about their fried rice that’s filled with umami and smokey flavours that puts fancy restaurants to shame. Not to mention that it’s topped off with a fried egg, and you’ve got yourself a rich and flavourful plate of rice.

Of course, it doesn’t come alone as well, as you can either come with barbecued pork or prawns. To top it all off, you can sprinkle some generous amounts of spicy sambal with each bite to get that extra kick!

Pro tip:

The place typically gets crowded during lunchtime and dinnertime every day so Avoid the crowds by visiting from around 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Shimokita Space is one of the most unique dining spots in Subang Jaya, as it doubles as a thrift store. This is why you’ll find it decorated with vintage stuff like arcade machines, old CRT TVs, typewriters, disco balls and neon lights.

However, the food remains the main highlight here, as they serve some of the most amazing smashed burgers in the city. These burgers come with the usual fix-ins like mayo, ketchup, pickles, American cheese and of course, a side of fries.

As for their drinks, the biggest star of the show is their ButterBeer. We don’t know how they made it but one thing’s for sure, it’s not wizardry!

Pro tip:

Be sure to dress your best streetwear when visiting this spot! The grungy interior and the overall vintage vibe make for a perfect backdrop for your Insta-worthy photos.

Jibby & Co is one of those places that you can visit when you and your friends can’t decide on what to eat. It features a widely varied menu consisting of Western classics that will satisfy your savoury cravings like cheeseburgers, ribeye steaks and fried chicken breast.

If you want our advice, however, we recommend their fish and chips, as they offer one of the best versions of this dish in Subang Jaya or even Kuala Lumpur, in general. The fish is flakey while the crust remains crispy and the homemade tartare sauce is to die for—chef’s kiss!

Meanwhile, you can help yourself with one of their leafy green salads if you’re on a strict diet. It’s not like you’re settling for less though, as they’re just as flavourful as their mains, especially their smoked salmon salad.

Pro tip:

If you’re looking for something more local, we highly recommend ordering their Jibby Platter, which is their version of a nasi lemak. It features fragrant rice, fried chicken, spicy sambal, cucumber—the works.

It’s hard to make the wrong order here, as all of their offerings look and taste spectacular! One dish that sticks out from the rest, however, is their seafood paella thanks to its colourful presentation, fragrant aroma and abundance of prawns and mussels.

As for their appetizers, we love their fried calamari the most because of their interesting texture and taste. Plus, it comes with this delicious homemade mayo sauce that perfectly complements the squid!

Pro tip:

If you’re coming in big groups, one of the best dishes you can order from their menu is their pizza. They’re huge and can come in delicious flavours like BBQ chicken, which coincidentally is our favourite variation.

Sometimes, all it takes to please your tastebuds is a crispy fried chicken and for this need, we highly recommend Hot Bird. This go-to chicken joint features the juiciest and most flavourful chicken, courtesy of their selection of sauces!

You can go for the usual buffalo but if you want a real spicy treat, you have to get their Nashville-style reaper chicken! Dip these or any chicken for that matter in one of their sauces, whether it be their ranch, garlic, or cheese, and you’re golden.

Aside from getting them in their chicken tender form, you can also get these well-marinated fried birds in a sandwich! These with a side of their Cajun-style fries are a match made in heaven!

Pro tip:

You can balance out the spiciness of the chicken wings by ordering one of their milkshakes! They come in different flavours like strawberry, chocolate and peanut butter.

Chachi Mexican Street Food is the best spot in the city to get some authentic tacos, burritos, quesadillas and all the classic dishes from this country’s cuisine. Before anything else, however, we highly recommend ordering their Al Pastor Nachos as your appetisers!

From there, you can make your way to their pulled beef birria taco set, which we think is nailed to perfection! From the softness of the flour tortilla to the oozing melted cheese and pulled beef chunks, everything about this dish is nailed to a tee.

If you’re looking for something more hearty, however, we recommend ordering one of their bowls! One of their best offerings under this menu is the fried chicken and rice bake, as it’s basically a naked chicken burrito–-plus it comes with a delicious side of homemade sour cream!
