If you’re looking for a place to satisfy your sweet tooth that also doubles as an Instaworthy spot, then Hema Hema Ice Cream should be on your radar! This simple yet elegant store isn’t your typical ice cream parlour, featuring sleek and modern designs rather than vibrant colours.

Enough about its looks though, as the real highlight here is their amazing selection of ice cream, all of which feature silk-like textures and striking colours. The flavours here range anywhere from classic vanilla to more complex ones like oolong tea.

If you love green tea, you’ll also be pleased to know that they offer an amazing version of matcha. It’s creamy and slightly sweet while maintaining that distinct earthy taste of matcha that we all know and love.

The shop is almost always crowded, especially during the weekends. To avoid long queues, we recommend visiting on Mondays or Tuesdays.

Inside Scoop is the quintessential ice cream parlour, as it’s one of those places where you can feel like a kid again and be in awe of the rows of flavours they have on display. What’s more impressive is that they manage to continuously grow this selection!

A perfect example of this is their summer series, which incorporates flavours from fresh tropical fruits like mangoes, dragonfruit and more. Of course, they still feature your time-tested flavours like chocolate, vanilla, strawberry—the works.

Furthermore, we love how they use local fruits to create some of the creamiest and most delicious ice cream flavours. For instance, they offer an amazing durian flavour, that actually tastes like the fruit itself—pretty neat!

Urban Artisan is hands-down one of the coolest cafes in Penang and that’s not just because of its hip and modern design! This place is known locally for being among the best spots to get soft-serve ice cream and we’re not ones to argue with that claim.

We absolutely love how they feature a wide variety of flavours to cater to different tastes. From matcha green tea to cheesecake, salted butterscotch, pure durian and more, you’ll find something that your tastebuds will love from their selection.

Their soft-serve ice cream never fails to wow us once we see how they tower over their cones to the point where they look like they’ll fall. It also helps that the flavours they come in bear beautiful bright colours, making them all the more enticing to look at.

Pro tip:

If you ever crave some local delicacies while you’re here, be sure to stop by New World Park! It’s an amazing outdoor food court that features countless hawker stalls that serve anything like ice kacang, hokkien mee, char koay teow.

The Ais should be on your radar if you’re looking for a cute and simple place to stay while chowing down on your ice cream. It’s a small family-owned business that’s been gaining a lot of traction lately because of its unconventional ice cream flavours.

Among these flavours, one that immediately caught our attention was the Soju Yakult. We’ve never thought of this combination outside of nightlife, but they’ve managed to make it work in ice cream form so major props to them!

That’s just barely the tip of the iceberg, however, as their sea of flavours contains anything from classic chocolate and vanilla to fruity flavours like watermelon and lychee. Furthermore, you can have these ice creams scooped on top of waffles—pretty cool!

Pro tip:

Make sure to stop by Chinatown Penang before or after your ice cream feast in The Ais! It’s located just across the street from the store and it’s where you’ll find more local eats and local products.

If you’re feeling extra crazy, you can also order an ice cream sandwich! Because what’s better than ice cream squished together between two cookies, right?

Ludwig Soft Serve offers some of the cutest ice cream in town, with its cute swirls, colourful flavours and creative cones. For starters, they offer cones that are wrapped with froot loops that don’t just make the overall ice cream more colourful but flavourful as well!

Speaking of being flavourful, the number of variations they have on their menu is quite impressive, to say the least. For instance, they offer flavours that you wouldn’t typically find in traditional ice cream parlours like milk Himalayan sea salt and peanut butter.

The ice cream isn’t the only thing that’s Instaworthy here too, as the place itself is one of the most beautiful ice cream parlours we’ve seen in the city. It features a boho and tropical look that’s dotted with neon lights and green plants—perfect for taking photos!

Featuring a fully outdoor dining area, Fu Er Dai will leave you feeling like a local getting dim sum from pushcarts. With their wide variety of dim sum, I could honestly say that this experience is the foodie’s equivalent to a kid in a candy shop.

They offer just about everything, from classic shu mai to steamed salted egg buns, veggie dumplings and anything in between. If you love to be adventurous though, we highly recommend ordering their chicken feet.

The best part about this is that you can get as many flavours as you desire since their price point doesn’t break the bank.

Pro tip:

If the store is full during your visit, don’t worry! You can walk down the block from the store and admire some of Penang’s beautiful street murals like the Girl in Yellow Uniform and Turtle with Human Heads.
