Da Bao Restobar is one of the best at innovating traditional Chinese bao, making it an instant classic addition to KL’s ever-growing food scene. Nestled in the busy street of Chinatown, this place will wow you with its massive overloaded baos!

These baos are their specialties and they can feature different types of fillings such as pork, lamb, fish and our personal favourite, softshell crab! On top of your meat of choice, these baos will also come overloaded with ingredients like cabbage, tomatoes, cilantro and more!

Meanwhile, if you’re craving something meaty but don’t want to break your strict vegetarian diet, you can try their “cheesebaoger”. This lip-smacking dish features a plant-based patty topped with caramelised onions, garlic aioli, cheese and cabbage—yum!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking to order something for sharing or you simply aren’t a fan of baos, you can opt for one of their rice bowls. They’re just as delicious and overloaded with different types of meat and veggies.

When it comes to choosing a place to enjoy baos or Chinese food, in general, Din Tai Fung is a name that always pops up in the conversation. It’s not hard to see why too, given its wide array of variations for these Chinese steamed buns.

One of their best offerings is their xiao long baos, which are pockets of flavourful broths along with a hearty dollop of meat. Biting into these buns will treat your mouth to an explosion of flavours (literally), especially when you dip them into their special sauce.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something that can satisfy your sweet tooth, you can opt for their chocolate xiao long bao. It follows the same principle as the aforementioned version but this time, you’ll be met with a dark and rich chocolate sauce upon biting into the bao.

Pro tip:

If you’re looking to order something more filling alongside your xiao long bao, we highly recommend going for their pork chop egg fried rice. The crispy skin of the pork paired with its flavourful meat and the flavourful rice make for a fantastic combination!

The Bao Guys

The Bao Guys is a foodie’s staple in Kuala Lumpur and their skyrocket to fame is quite impressive. They immediately grew out of their SS2 shop and now, they’ve been serving the same premium quality baos in Lalaport.

One of the ways they separate themselves from a traditional Chinese restaurant is their modern approach to the dish. For instance, some of their baos are coloured black, which they call charcoal bao, instead of the usual white ones.

Furthermore, they don’t shy away from introducing amazing fillings to incorporate into their baos. You can either go for the proven and tested spicy chicken or try their duck or spicy braised beef but here’s the catch: there’s no wrong decision!

Pro tip:

If you’re looking to end your meal on a sweet note, we recommend ordering their onde-onde, which is one of the most famous traditional Malaysian sweets. They’re these bite-sized rice balls that are filled with gula melaka, also known as palm sugar.

If you’re not looking for anything fancy and just want to get your fix of authentic Chinese bao, then Restoran Wai Kwan should be right up your alley! This no-frills restaurant offers what we think is the most traditional version of a Chinese bao.

For starters, they make all of their boas in-house, from the dough to the fillings and everything in between. They even steam their baos inside bamboo steamers, which further reiterates their traditional style, and we’re all for it!

As for their fillings, you can either choose from char siew (barbequed pork) preserved mustard greens and red fermented beancurd pork belly. Among all of them, our favourite is the char siew because of its distinct smokey taste.

Pro tip:

Consider coming here if you’re looking to be immersed in Malaysia’s bustling street food scene! They serve dishes like chee cheong fun and pan mee!

Kedai Kopi Mee Bon

Kedai Kopi Mee Bon is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Klang and it’s not hard to see why crowds still flock towards it today. They offer classics like dim sums and fish balls but their best offering is undoubtedly their baos.

Their signature baos aren’t anything fancy and are instead by the book, featuring white fluffy dough that’s packed with different fillings. They offer tons of flavour but their two bestsellers are the red bean paste and roasted pork, the latter of which is a personal favourite of ours.

We love their baos because of the fluffiness of the dough. It’s also slightly flavoured but still bland enough so that it can serve as the perfect vessel for the different types of fillings they offer here.

Pro tip:

One of the easiest and cheapest ways you can get here is by riding the bus and dropping off at the Riverwalk Village bus station. From there, you only have to walk down the block and cross the street to reach the restaurant.

Yun House isn’t a strictly bao-only restaurant but it sure is one of the finest places to get Chinese food in Klang so we had to include it here. In fact, the only bao they serve here is their famous xiao long bao but that’s not to say you’re settling for less!

Their xiao long bao is super flavourful because aside from the broth, they’re packed with tons of fresh ingredients. These ingredients include spring onions, ginger, chicken and crab roe, which is a game changer!

It’s located in the grandiose Four Seasons Hotel so you can expect premium quality with their other dishes as well! Other dishes of theirs you must try include their braised phoenix claw, lobster broth dumplings and deep-fried sea cucumber dumplings.

Pro tip:

If you’re planning on commuting, you can easily ride the train and drop off at the KLCC Tram Station. From there, the Four Seasons Hotel is only a 3-minute walk away!
